Do any receivers work magic on SD TV signals?

I have a 60" Panasonic Plasma TV (TCP60ST30) and a Motorola HD cable box from Shaw in Vancouver. SD TV looks absolutely awful. Horrendous. Unwatchable. Except that my wife still likes to watch a bunch of shows in SD.

I am curious if there are any receivers with video processing that vastly improve SD TV on HD TV's. I'm doubtful, but I thought I'd ask.

I have a yamaha that does really good with a 480p signal, but not so good with 480i stuff that is from the mid 90s and earlier. I will say it scales 480p to 1080p better than my Mitsubishi tv does. I was say the majority of the time it comes down to the quality of the source material.

I wouldn't even think of using my AVR to process my video, my Mits does an excellent job with SD although I never watch SD. It's probably your TV and your source.

Aside from using a stand alone video processor (eg. DVDO Edge), your TV is likely to do just as good a job itself as any video chip in an AVR.
