What would you guys recommend for the best sound an Anthem MRX300 plus amp or Onkyo TX-NR3009 using its internal amps. I have a goldenear triton two setup

why would you not use the amp in the Anthem but would use the one in the Onkyo? Anthem amps are very good quality and produce a great sound. Plus the "real" power of the Anthem vs the Onkyo although there is not as big as you might think... also you could get a MX700 which has lots more power and a few more bells too.

The MRX 300 has better room correction and adequate amps. So I would go with that and only add an amp later if you hear clipping.

The MRX amps are standard Chinese class AB parts, just like the Onkyo box's. Nothing special at all. But there's nothing wrong with them either. They're perfectly adequate to drive most speakers in most rooms to very high levels. Most people don't gain anything but psychic benefit from adding an amp to a decent AVR, be it an Anthem or an Onkyo or other...

The MRX 700 doesn't have "a lot more power" (beefier PS, but same amp circuits). It comes out to about 2dBW more than the MRX 300. If the MRX 300 "needs" a separate amp, so does the MRX 700. And the grand difference between the two can buy a lot of standalone amp.

So you think ARC is better than xt32?

So you would not consider 50% more wattage to be a lot more power? I am not talking about SPL readings just wattage. You are correct it would be less than 2db different and only adding an amp if clipping is the correct way to look at it.

In the reviews the Anthem actually output what it is rated at, where as many AVRs output much less... that is my basis for saying atual power or better stated as rated power is actually there.

The 700 does have more features as well. (Play Music Internet Radio, HD Radio,
from Flash Drive or USB Hard Disk)

I have the MRX300 and it does a good job, but I did ad an external amp. I went with the Parasound Halo A51.

I would suggest starting with the receiver first and see if you really need to add the amp.

I'm sitting on a plane right now, so this post will be cursory. Audyssey Pro is equal to or better than ARC. Non-Pro Audyssey imposes an "incompetently designed speaker" notch in the midrange.

And to the other post, no "50% more wattage" is not a material difference. If you "need" more than ~50w/ch, you shouldnt bother with less than ~200w/ch.

All that said, I use a separate amp with my MRX 300. That is only because I plan to use active crossovers on my mains, and separate amps are the only way to do that.
