Can you beat the Sony SS-F6000 by DIY?

Probably not, but it leads me to wonder how good those Sony's are anyway. Worth $200? They could be gems or utter rubbish - I dunno as I haven't heard them.

From my POV, if budget is your prime consideration, then second hand is by far best value. If it's performance then DIY wins, especially as you go up the performance scale.

DIY on an extreme budget isnt so good. Its better for if you have a modest to high budget and want to really get your moneys worth

I have these speakers from about 10 years ago and they have serverd me very well.

I got a pair of SS-F6000's in August and have been very pleased. I was planning on spending about $500 on a pair of towers, but after days of searching and reading reviews, it seemed almost everything from $300-$800 was not much different, the size of woofers changed and maximum power handling but the quality seemed to be pretty constant and opinions were strongly biased by brand loyalty.

I had never heard a great pair of sony speakers but when I saw all the praising reviews at multiple sites for the F6000's and the price, I decided to give them a try. The sound clarity and overall performance really surpised me, the detail they produce when listening to music is fantastic and they can get loud and intense during movie watching without any distortion.

I already owned a subwoofer so I was not trying to get excessive bass from my front L/R but these speakers produced more than I expected, so much so that I decided to turn my crossover down from 80Hz to 50Hz and turn up my subwoofer, so now the low end gets to really rumble when it should and the F6000's fill in the 50Hz-80Hz range very well.

These speakers did require a fair amount of equalizer adjustments to get a flat response, so if you don't have this ability they may not be a good choice. I'm able to change the equalizer setting for each speaker individually, so "I" was able to make these sound great and not affect my surrounds or center; I used MCACC auto mic calibration and then made some very slight adjustments after that for my personal tastes.

In Short: These are exceptional speakers for the money as long as you calibrate them. For music you may not need a subwoofer depending on your craving for bass, for home theater setup you should still probably get one; for an apartment setup these would be great without a sub.

If one considered buying instead of a DIY effort, I'd examine the active monitor offerings that abound the scene. It's an extremely competitive marketplace, thus the value is similarly high.

Yes all the big companies like Sony, Harman, et al, have decent value items such as the OP listed, but the active two ways availed to us at your local music store retailer (or online at Musician's Friend, etc.) are just killer deals,.....with quality sound that was unthinkable at these prices just a short time ago.

IMO, the super cheap towers, or multi-way loudspeakers on the market today, really fail wrt the cabinets low quality,... ringing like crazy. The excessive contribution just colors the output nastily. My take...
