Just finishing up our custom kitchen (yay!) and thinking of how I can get a subwoofer into my setup. There is zero room in the actual kitchen itself -- I have in-wall speakers and driving them with a Dayton Audio APA-150 (both of which I'm very happy with). What I was thinking is that I could do an under-floor mounted IB style sub under the one side of my cabinets and then bring it up through the floor and terminate through the toe-kick of the bottom cabinet (on the same side as where my speakers are mounted). I have some room from below -- probably about 16" height clearance into the basement drop ceiling -- but I think that I would probably want to keep the setup fairly small. I don't need a ton of power or need to move a serious amount of air, I just need to fill out the bottom end of things and add a little thump.
I have three questions that I'm hoping someone can help me with:
1. Does anyone have experience using smallish drivers for IB/Manifold type designs? I'm thinking a pair of 8" or at most 10" drivers (I'd go even smaller with the drivers if it was feasible). I'm not looking for high SPL here, just need to move some air into a smallish room.
2. Am I crazy to try and bring this up out of the toe-kick under the cabinets? It's not possible to bring the manifold port directly into the space due to the small kitchen layout so whatever my solution is it needs to have the extra throat on it ... if it makes things incredibly wonky I can add a 4 band parametric EQ into the mix and tweak as needed.
3. Are there any published/free designs for smallish IB setups or do I have to go back to sub school and get out the calculator to figure things out myself? I've done some sub design in the past -- but not for home stereo type usage, I did manifold type sub's for live band usage (and we built and used a lot of them and they were fantastic). At the time I think I used MacSpeakerz to do all the volume calculations, but that apps appears to be long dead. Not looking for studio quality here, just a little more thump an some general enhancement in the 40-160hz sort of range. Don't want to get too far into it buying apps and the like if I can find a simple design and just use it.
