Do I really need an AMP??? - Page 2

Congratulations on your decision-you have come up with a rational decision that you are now comfortable with. So many people post a situation, get bombarded with a million viewpoints, and never end up with something that they are personally really comfortable with!

You can thank my plasma, avr, amps and computers for that

Ha! So you're earning a high "A" and ruining the curve for those other failing grade neighbors. Good for you!

Wow, you guys must all live in homes with huge lots and/or deaf neighbors.

There's no way you are going to get the added benefit of the higher clean power that Emotiva amp provides without seriously pissing off your neighbors, to the point your landlord may actually drive you out if they complain a lot.

HTM did a review of that receiver when it came out. It can do: All channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads, 0.1 percent distortion at 113.5 watts. That's a really good bench test for 7-channels @ 8ohms!

Seems like the current setup is doing fine for you.

I have mixed feelings on this topic. My bedroom receiver is an 800 series Yamaha. My bedroom system is normally at low volume for watching TV in bed. Sometimes when I am working on some project, I use it instead of the living room system (playing from iTunes via Airport express.) And in comparison, it seems to lack power. I can't quantify it though.

Based on that, which is rather a house of cards, I would say more power than the 800 series can put out would be welcome.

That means either a "higher end Yamaha", or amps makes some sort of difference...maybe.

Another point is that, while you may need very little power most of the time, there are scenes in movies which are going to need many times the power you normally need. It's for those times, where your receiver is not getting it done, external amps might be desirable.

The problem, as I see it, is that receivers are not equipped with clip detection or detection that the limiter circuits are activating. So you need to assess whether you are running out of power by listening to very loud scenes, which I think is not easy (how do you know how clean they sound to begin with?)
