Saw Looper tonight, also with lens flare but a much more interesting twist in time travel.

I don't understand why there is such a long thread on such an awful movie. It had a better cast than the original but was not interesting for even one frame.

Looper was at least OK.

We need Spielberg to remake Forbidden Planet.

Hmmm...I might spring for a ticket to see that.

Why should a great movie be remade? There isn't much to gain and there is a high risk of ruining it.
Now if something like Plan 9 From Outer Space (so bad that not many know about it) gets remade...

Just watched this, it was low on my priority list but I actually enjoyed it. Not anything worth owning but good mercy sweet sweet Kate... It might be time for her to dethrone Marisa Tomei from the top of my pick 3 list! I was kinda bummed when I found out there was no Mars or aliens as I enjoyed that in the original but was also glad they didn't just make a copy. At least they still tried to change a few things to make it somewhat separate. All in all it was worth a rent and entertaining but Kate was mmmm, ok, you get the point.

What aliens in the original?

Mutants, aliens, whatever. "Where did this reactor come from?" "Aliens build it"

True the aliens built the reactor, but all you see are mutants, the aliens are long gone. Original still lacked...cheesy production and too much Ahnold.

The original was far from perfect but it was "original" so there wasn't a shoe to fill. Also it made up for some of the shortcomings with what was at the time a healthy serving of gore I mean, "see you at the party Richter" just doesn't work without also tossing some shredded arm stumps.

Aside from her looks and charm I enjoyed Kat's character more than Stone as well but it did kinds feel like an iRobot spin-off at the same time.

At the very least it is a passing of the torch for old style and new style sci-fi action movies.

So you all are fine with the credibility of traveling through earth core compared to traveling to Mars?

Let alone all the "Journey to the Center of the Earth" films....

I meant more in terms of the lead action hero and effects of the 80's versus now. Old TR is superior but New TR is what we get today.

I still remember coming out of the theater in 1990 after seeing the original and raving at the action and special effects. But it was the combination of this, the Verhoeven edge it had, and so many winning lines that made the package. Arnold was at the top of his star power and, for the time, the original had it all for effects and content in this genre.

I enjoyed "new TR" as it was a fun rental that looked and sounded slick with current cgi etc. - and Kate was awesome. But hard to find a movie in this genre that gives effects and content...

Hence the passing of the torch....even if the next torch carrier sucks.

Internet should make it easy, it's another great science fiction writer's invention that came to life and is used on those Mars missions....

I just saw this one over the weekend thanks to Redbox.

I had avoided it in the theater; I just wasn't that interested. Although I liked the original and would consider it "essential" sci-fi for a guy my age, let's face it, it was a cheese-fest. A remake didn't interest me.

I'm going to have to break rank here and say that I really enjoyed it. I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the camera work and set design. The scene when he first breaks out of rekall, the camara moved in, out, and 360 degrees around the action all at the same time. It wasn't shaky-cam and I thought it was awesome. I loved the long shots of the running over the roof-tops. I loved the "Blade Runner" vibe it had. The CGI was good. The action scenes were very well done. I hate it when hand-to-hand action is edited with quick-edits; it pulls me totally out of what's happening. This felt just right.

I was surprised at the scene where he breaks through security. There was the heavy woman in the fore and she looked so similar to the woman in the original that I just knew she would turn into Colin Farrell. Nope. Worth a grin.

Three-breasted lady? Check. Gotta have that.

Sure there were some technical issues regarding the story like traveling through the earth's core, the guns with endless casing-less ammo. I noticed it but didn't care a bit. Not once did it pull me out of what was going on. And compared to the original, this was well within the bounds of believability.

It's a shame this one didn't get more love. I guess the 2012 Total Recall will become one of those guilty pleasures for me.

I agree. The Total Recall remake is loud and dumb but it is well performed by an excellent ensemble cast. So what if you have to check your analytical skills and incredulity at the door? The film moves fast and is a lit of fun, so what's not to like?

That's easy, Robert A. Heinlein novella in the book Waldo and Magic Inc.. It refers to mechanical hands used to manipulate objects remotely, as seen in the very first George Lucas film THX 1138. This 1971 film was a studio budget remake of a low budget George Lucas student film.
