Samsung UN55D6300 vs UN55ES6500 -- which would you choose, and why?

The currently available mid-range 55" Samsung LED TVs include the 2011 UN55D6300 and 2012 UN55ES6500. The Samsung website does not have an updated comparison table of 2012 models, so I have had to compare features of these two based on the glossy ad sheets. They mostly line up.

One major difference -- the ES6500 is 3D, whereas the D6300 is 2D. I am "meh" about 3D capability, so that is not a big differentiator for me. Content will mostly be sports and movies. Sources will be FIOS and OTA, perhaps some streaming. Primary goals are best PQ, and good off-axis performance.

The ES6500 is currently about US$100-$200 more than the D6300.

Thoughts on these two models from a comparison standpoint? Which one would you get, and why?

Niether if you're really a stickler for good off-angle performance. Plasma is best in this regard, IPS panel led/lcd (LG or Panasonic) second best.

Well let me qualify the off-axis need as "moderate" -- I took the picture above at basically the very worst case viewing angle.

At that angle and that viewing distance I don't think you'd have much if any problem with either set you mentionned. It looks like the set's going to end up being mounted fairly high on the wall so a tilting wall mount is going to be desirable--off angle performance usually deteriorates more on the vertical plane than the horizontal so you want your eyeline to be as close to perpendicular with the screen surface as possible.

The picture is a little deceiving because of the wall/ceiling intersection of the loft; that wall is only about 6.5ft (2m) to the joint. The location of the cable entry and outlet will be along the top edge of the TV, so given the 55" models that I am looking at, the bottom edge of the TV will be about 2.5ft from the floor. Below picture has some painter's tape at the corners. The mount that I have has 15degree adjustability so I will incorporate a slight downward tilt. Moreover, I can if needed mount the TV lower than shown -- as I have easy access in behind the kneewall and can move the electrical receptacle and A/V cable entry downward.

Anyway, now you folks all know all the details about the wall mounting and room layout -- what do you think about the midrange 2011 "D6300" model vs the 2012 "ES6500" model?

In general, 3D capable models out perform 2D models in PQ. The 6500 will probably handle motion a little better and give a more accurate/realistic image since it likely has a better processor (to handle the extra processing 3D requires).

I have both in my store and ill check tomorrow if i notice major differences in PQ given i remember to.

On a very similar note. Could someone tell me if it is worth to spend $400 more on 6500 comparing to Costco's 6450 version on 6400?
