The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (Enhanced Edition)

Anyone play this or plan on playing it?

I never ever play RPG and generally stay away from the genre (avoided Skyrim like the plague).

But something about this game is drawing me. The 360 looks fabulous. The previews are coming back stellar. Can people chime in on whether this is a game I would enjoy? I'm liking Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 and those are the closest things to RPGs that I have. But part of the allure of ME is that it's in the sci-fi arena. I usually don't like medieval type games. The last medieval game I played was probably Warcraft 3 or Castle Crashers.

Gameplay videos would be more helpful. So would an explanation of why they beeped out the name of the assassin...
I've got my eye on this one too... Looks like a winner.

I know the PC version is highly regarded - anyone here play it?
Played the PC version, extensively. Loved it, loved everything about it.

The gameplay videos I have seen of the 360 version looks good, but the voice actor for the main character was changed and it sounds horrible. The PC version his voice is amazing, but in the 360 it does not fit. Other then that, it still looks pretty sweet. Will probably pick it up for the 360 too so I have a good RPG for that system.

Witcher 2 demolished DA2. Bioware should have been embarrassed about DA2 after witcher 2

not sure how good it will be on the xbox(it will be NO where near as pretty that's for sure) but it's definitely worth the purchase.
I'm an RPG-junkie so I'll definitely be picking this up! Been following its development for quite a while now. Just hoping I can finish it before Diablo 3 comes out as I know that will take up a lot of my time.

sorry for being a n00b to RPGs. but is DA2 referring to dragon age II?

I bought the game on sale through steam a while back and haven't even played it yet. The enhanced edition update comes out on the 17th, that's when I'll actually start it. They are offering a back up copy through gog.com (drm free of course) for anyone that bought the game already. The devs are progressive and supportive of their fans. They deserve your money even if you don't like this type of game

During the press conference when they were announcing this they were saying some of the areas in the xbox version looked even better, I don't know how true it is, but it was said...
So did the PC version have umpteen keys to press to have quick access to all the tools he carried, and we'll have to use another power wheel? Will anyone ever enable the chatpad to cover some of those, or is that against some 'universality' policy to which Xbox developers have to conform?...

360 of course can't match PC High settings. but it looks equivalent to PC medium in most places or better than PC medium in other places. like at 0:37-0:50.

I'm wondering if they were having recording problems on the PC like the scene that was entirely too blue. or the scene that was entirely too red.

Early reviews of the 360 version are looking very good - ranking high on Metacritic!

Here's a very positive review at NowGamer - made me pre-order the game.

EDIT: IGN have it a respectable 8.5 (editors' choice).

I just hope the T-shirt from Best Buy fits...

L for everybody AGAIN. L is a touch too tight...

Looks good.

Anyone playing this on 360 yet? I would love to hear initial impressions. Mine will be delivered today - hope to get an hour or two in tonight.

Could someone enlighten me as to how the save-system works in this game? Hopefully it is like Skyrim and lets you save anywhere.
Save acted OK when I did it right after leaving the tent once you wake up, but I have yet to load to see if you get put right back where you were. Crysis 2 ticked me off by doing a chapter-like save that restored me well before the spot where I saved, so we'll see.

Character moves funny, kinda swimming in spots. The tutorial went poorly when the first group of 3 killed me, but that rated Normal gameplay which I was OK with. I may get angry later when the Y button needs to be held rather than just pressed to work right in a given situation, but that's why I do need to load to find out how often I should save...
I need LOTS of fighting practice, but it didn't take a LOT of retries to get through the first solo multi-enemy battle. Not sure there's a good versus evil thing going on based on my decisions, like killing Aryan La Valette, but I'm just plowing ahead for now...

Are there extended dialog/cut-scene sections in this game? Not a huge fan of dialog trees.

That's one thing Mass Effect ballanced well as an RPG - Bioware condensed the plot to keep things flowing at a good speed, but with enough detail to feel deep. And much of it was skipable, if desired.

I'm hoping the devs of Witcher 2 took a similar approach.

Seems like a LOT of dialog to me, but I'm just a 360 gamer who doesn't play PC games. You do get to skip through it with the A button, so my retries aren't tedious. And so far, in several conversations you have to pick one of the responses and what you'd get from the other won't be known unless you retry, while the list of choices in others reappear until you pick the 'exit' dialog text.

Resources aren't very plentiful so far, and as I move ahead I'm burning up all the potions I made (and apparently got an Achievement for) so stopping at every barrel-like object and hoping the Examine option shows up is important. Word to the wise about the area you wake up in...

Kotaku posted some tips for those trying to get into The Witcher 2. Since I don't have the game yet, I don't know if these tips are useful or not:

Quen didn't help me as much as gluing them to the ground with Yrden. The rolling thing I learned from other games and IS important...

After reading about the perks, I'm thinking I'll start over tomorrow. Long tutorial sounds like a good story for later...
Well, that didn't work as well as I hoped. I actually started over late last night, and found several annoyances that weren't such a big deal the first time due to good luck. Getting out of the prolog now seems tough: anyone spot a store to buy stuff?

Resources are random, so I had a bunch to make into potions and bombs the first time but less the second (third and counting now). Six bombs versus one is not a good deal. I even tested the chest near the guy who'll play dice with you, and it gave random coinage and stuff like twine. That test was easy since every time I lose at dice I reload and every time I win I save.

I have a save JUST before I hop onto the top of the fortress where Aryan La Valette is. Once you're past that, there's a section where you have to deal with some guards while running from REAL danger, and for some reason I keep dying now. It appears I can't take any potions, since any I take before talking to La Valette aren't in effect anymore for that next part and it's not a place where one can Meditate to swallow more. How I got through the bunch of guards the first time is now a mystery: maybe more bombs, I'm not sure.

I now have one extra perk for later due to the link above, but there may come a time when just plodding along without it might have been a better deal...
What difficulty are you playing at?

After the tutorial arena battle it suggested for me to play on Easy, which at first disappointed me - but it's probably for the best.
Normal. I did the tutorial twice and died fighting the first group of three (wizard, mini troll-thing and whatever else) that it throws at you, and the result was Normal both times.

Now, I'm not bad at groups of three regular guards, I got the Perfectionist Achievement last night which surprised me. It's fighting a pile of guards while trying to avoid bursting into flame that bugs me now. Just not hacking it for some reason.

MAYBE I'll consider starting at Easy and moving up to Normal later...

Ok, took some vacation time and have been playing this extensively.

Save works great, save anywhere any time (except for battles). Graphics look good, but the reviewers are smoking crack if they think this looks as good as the PC version (I have the PC version too and finished it on there). Not even close. The engine runs a little rough on the 360 with lots of misses on combat, climbing feels off and hit or miss, and overall it just doesn't run that nice on the 360. With that said, it still is a solid game, I would say 8 out of 10. It is werid how sometimes they used a new voice for the witcher in certain scenes with someone trying to sound like the original then they switch back to the original voice, really weird, only happens in a few scenese but I don't understand why they did that. The loot is good, but limited to the benefits it provides, you really don't feel any different in battle when you have that new armor on you just built/found. Way more load times then the PC, but it definitely runs better when it is installed to the HD.

I would say this is a good port of a PC game that needed a little more polish, but overall it can be very addictive and Geralt is one of the baddest characters in a game ever. A great addition to the 360 library.

The PC Dev has a solid track record of patching their properties, maybe a 360 patch is in the works for the shortcomings you mention?

I'm really liking the games so far. It seems a little rough around the edges in some respects, like there doesn't seem to be a way to walk backwards, not able to block without taking some damage (I believe riposte still takes damage), voices seems to vary in volume at times, etc.

But it does look amazing, the atmosphere is great, interesting characters, plenty of side quest. I say the game ranks in the very best of 360 games so far.

Got the dice throwing Achievement. Now maybe I can concentrate on winning money.

I'm growing annoyed by the way the pockets 'work'. I made 6 bombs this time due to extra random stuff falling my way, and set them in my pockets just before talking to La Valette. Then the run for the gate while dealing with fire and guards. So I go to throw a bomb at a guard and, wait, nothing in my pockets now? Huh?? So I'm expected to pause to load my pockets after every cutscene? Really???

Beat them this time on Normal without it though. Apparently the guard level in spots is also random. Put my first point into Vitality in hopes it helps. REALLY want to start throwing daggers, but I'm not counting on a huge supply.

That book in the package is really spoilerific. Not sure there's non-random loot to find that it'd point to, but I'll be skimming it regularly just in case. Tumbling around to regain health (when your progress isn't timed, that is) isn't as good as finding stuff that keeps you from nearly dying...

How is the battle mechanics handled? Is it like the first Witcher on PC? I didn't like how your character would just lock on a person and you would hit the attack button without really controlling the character, you would just watch the animation.

Never played Witcher games so I can't compare. Mashing the X and A buttons works but not WELL. Shields really need personal attention, like a bomb or a Sign. Rolling around sometimes gives you an advantage if you get behind someone, but mostly I use it to get out of range for a moment.

Of course, I'm not very far in due to screwing around with enemies I should beat easily by now. Also 'rolling' the loot in the buildings by saving first then reloading if I don't get something good, a habit I picked up from other games where the loot is random. Picked up 8 rusty daggers from chests after a few retries. Even re-fought a cellar-dweller that didn't give anything the first time it died. Stuff like this is why I take forever to finish some games...
