Are you sure your not using the wrong output form the DVD player? possibly only one of the three component outs?

One thing you need to get into the habit of, list your equipment model numbers and how it is all hooked up or as its called the video chain.

More then likely you have a composite video cable going into the Green input for component video. But the image wouldnt be a perfect B&W it would still look very grainy. at least you know its getting a signal.
