DIY Screen for my first Epson 705HD

There are many choices you can make, or that can be suggested. We like for people to consider trying something that is good enough that any upgrade of a PJ will follow the Screen into the future.

Do you want your project to represent the best possible solution you can do with your budget/ability in mind? Or just something that will be better than expected, but not necessarily "mind-blowing"?

Look to you PJ for the needed considerations.

1. It's a very bright PJ

2. It has very mundane Contrast (3000:1 on-off) ....Blacks are nowhere near the level they need to be for what has become standard expectation in the world of Consumer Front Projection. Despite the PJ being listed within Epson's "Home Cinema" designation, basically the 705 is a "Presentation Quality" PJ.

3. Fortunately, by keeping your screen size down to 100' you give the 705's WXGA resolution the ability to look damn good when 1080i content is shown.

All that being said, the right choice of Paint can...and would make a considerable difference.

I suggest a simple mix made from "Glidden Diamond 450 Base Paint in Velvet Matte" tinted to a NG7.5 Gray (Glidden Color - Dover Gray)

With a darker Neutral Gray, plenty of Lumens, and a short throw, your going to get an image with considerable resistance to ambient light, and that has a very bright, colorful image.

MM, that looks like a nice suggestion.

How does 'tint' work?

So basically, you take a can of N9.7 (supposedly) paint and 'tint' it with N7.5 gray, now what's the end result?

A white/gray mixture somewhere between N7.5 and N9.7? Anymore specifics?

Now I know you know this...

The Base Paint is essentially the Foundation for the specific Tint. The Base "has" it's own set of specifications standing alone, but the addition of the Tints required to produce a specific shade of Gray changes all that. If one is to believe your report, which I do.

Selection of the particular Base can vary, from pure "Flat" to Satin.

The Base mentioned is familiar to you. Certainly the idea of a "Base" and specific "Tint" should be. As far as the mentioned Base's inherent properties, the list of benefits of which you have already mentioned before pretty much assures that as a Base, it's going to do any specific Neutral Tint justice.

So you see, at the end of the Mixing process, the end result should be as specified. A N7.5. < Dover Gray>

The Poster has the Lumen output. And a simple need for contrast improvement. Small screen. A Simple, inexpensive solution that's easy to apply, and one that without any preconceived expectations will deliver a pleasant surprise.

If the PJ was different, and the goal more lofty........

Ok, so is it the same as going to the store and ask for a can of Dover Gray? Do you not get the same end results as tinting?

OK.......,

Every Color you get at the store is a "Tint" added to whatever type Base you select.

You choose the Color....you get the Base you choose / is required (...some deep Grays require "Deep Base"...) , the Tech adds the Tints required to create the Color, shakes it up...and you get Dover Gray. Or whatever....of course.

that exactly what mm means. go to a store that specializes in that specific base by Glidden.
that specific base has already been measured... by kirnak with an eye1 pro... as being a NG9.7.
have that store then 'tint' that base to NG7.5... ie dover gray.

Home Depot sells Glidden products.

I believe the Glidden Diamond 450 is only available at Glidden Pro stores.

Home Depot carries the Glidden Duo (paint + primer) line.

The choice given was because of the recent revelation that the specific Glidden paint in question was a brighter, even more effective "White" than other recently used paints. I'd be surprised if it could not be ordered in.

But you bet, there are alternatives.
