ExTiX 10 64-bit is a remastered build of Ubuntu 12.04. The original system includes the Unity 5.8 desktop. After removing Unity I have installed GNOME 3.4, GNOME Shell and Razor-qt so that everyone can compare the different desktop environments. The system language is English. Installed programs include LibreOffice 3.5.3, AbiWord, Firefox 12.0, Opera, Thunderbird 12.0.1, Brasero, VLC 2.0.1, GIMP and win32 codecs. In addition, Java and all necessary additions are available in order to install programs from source. All programs have been updated to the latest available stable versions as of May 17, 2012. I have installed NVIDIA driver 295.53 so that you can enjoy the full GNOME desktop.

MATE 1.2

Linux Mint 13 "Maya" MATE Edition
Until Linux Mint 11, the main edition featured a "Gnome 2" desktop. In the last two years, Gnome 2 was discontinued and abandoned by its development team and a majority of Linux distributions. Developers in the Linux community gathered and joined forces within a new project, called MATE, to save the Gnome 2 desktop. The latest Gnome 2 codebase was renamed and MATE now provides the same desktop as Gnome 2 under a different name.

Pros:

MATE is stable and it works on all computers
MATE is among the most productive and easy to use desktops available.
MATE continues where Gnome 2 left off and introduces its own incremental improvements.
MATE comes with support for mintMenu, mintDesktop, Compiz and everything that made Gnome 2 the most popular Linux desktop.
MATE is built with GTK2, it features more themes and integrates with more applications than any other desktop.
Cons:

Some parts of Gnome 2 were not migrated to MATE yet and a few aspects such as Bluetooth support might not work as well as they did with Gnome 2.

Linux Mint 13 "Maya" Cinnamon Edition
Cinnamon was born for the same reasons as MATE. Gnome 2 was one of the core components of Linux Mint, and Gnome 3 lacked the features and design of a suitable alternative. Linux Mint started by developing the extra features it needed on top of Gnome 3 and eventually started to develop its own environment called Cinnamon.

Both Linux Mint and the MATE project came up with really good alternatives to Gnome, but in completely different ways.

Cinnamon is built on Clutter and Gnome 3. It's a modern-looking environment with a traditional and familiar desktop. It features compositing, animations and some unique innovations but it relies on 3D acceleration, lacks some of the features found in Gnome 2 and isn't yet compatible with every graphics card available on the market.

Pros:

Cinnamon is among the sleekest and most modern looking environments
Cinnamon features innovative features and emphasis on productivity with traditional desktop metaphors
Cinnamon is built on rapid technologies and its development pace is really fast
The Cinnamon community is very active, and produces a lot of new themes and applets
Cons:

Cinnamon requires 3D acceleration and might not work well for you, depending on your graphics card and/or drivers.
Cinnamon is brand new and unfortunately not yet as stable as more mature and established desktops such as MATE, KDE or Xfce.
Cinnamon relies on Gnome 3 and Clutter, which are also both brand new and going through rapid transformations.

Snowlinux 2 "Cream" is based upon the LTS edition Ubuntu 12.04 "Precise Pangolin" and is supported for 5 years until April 2017. Because of the fact of LTS this edition is extremly stable and fast. Due drastic changes with Gnome 3 and Unity, Snowlinux is getting as always a traditional desktop like Gnome 2, the Gnome 3 fork Cinnamon and the Gnome 3 Fallback.

Snowlinux 2 "Cream" is based upon Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin. It comes with the long-term-support (LTS) Linux kernel 3.2 which were made available upstream and MATE 1.2. It has installed chromium-browser, icedove, banshee and shotwell by default.



Life cycle:

Snowlinux 2 "Cream" is a LTS edition and supported until April 2017.

These are some of the new features: KDE 4.8.3; Firefox KDE integration, GIMP 2.8 and Skype 4.0; Samba Mounter for easy NAS setup; web accounts for integrating your social accounts; Runners ID for free and libre cloud storage and music streaming; Muon Discover. Since this is a hybrid ISO, you can for example use UNetbootin or imagewriter for putting Netrunner on a USB stick. For 64-bit machines with EFI you may experience a crash during installation when trying to install the bootloader, it is advised to use imagewriter, as it does use another bootloader, which makes the ISO install fine

Antoni Norman has announced the release of Pinguy OS 12.04, an Ubuntu-based desktop Linux distribution with a customised GNOME Shell user interface: "Here is the final release of Pinguy OS 12.04 LTS. We have fully embraced GNOME Shell here and wanted a modern, updated site to go with the new look of the desktop. In this release we have: Linux Kernel 3.2, GNOME 3.4.1, WINE 1.5.6, Skype 4.0, TeamViewer 7, XBMC-PVR 11.0 Eden, GNOME Shell Extension Updater and everything else that was present in the previous beta release. Ultimate Edition 3.4 was built off Ubuntu 12.04 'Precise Pangolin'. All updates fully applied, old kernels purged, new initrd and vmlinuz rebuilt. Ultimate Edition 3.4 is what 2.6 series was - a stable environment. GNOME, the default environment is rock solid. Ultimate Edition 3.4 has a new GTK+ 3 theme and a comprehensive set of software packages. I have really placed thought and diligence into what this product is. Ultimate Edition 3.4 takes things to a whole new level. It was developed with stability in mind, sorry KDE users, we will catch you in Ultimate Edition 3.5. This OS will be my primary OS for some time to come. That statement alone says a lot for my feeling on this operating system

Clement Lefebvre has announced the availability of the Xfce edition of Linux Mint 13, codename Maya.
