Try Rage, runs 60fps and looks infinitly better than mw3. Its running on the latest Id tech 5 engine while mw3 is running on a modified 10 year old Id tech 3 engine from Quake 3.

Rage looks good but it has it's own share of compromises. Megatextures just wouldn't work well in a game with random spawning...rage already had ridiculous texture pop in merely by turning around quickly. You also had a constantly shifting resolution, screen tear, zero anti aliasing, and it still suffered from the same reduced geometry and flat lighting that all games that choose to run at 60fps have to deal with.

That being said, rage looks fantastic, and anything that runs at 60FPS gets a huge thumbs up from me....but many of those choices that make it look especially great in its campaign just wouldn't work particularly well in multiplayer for cod. Id tech 5 is nothing but a heavily modified version of older id tech engines anyway. It's not like Carmack is the only guy in the world capable of this stuff.

Either way, a close up screenshot of a game with relatively low res textures isn't exactly putting your best foot forward.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II was confirmed by the game's official UK website this morning which describes the shooter as set during a 21st Century Cold War and hints at a battle in Los Angeles. The game hits on Nov. 13 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 website appears to have gone up early, confirming the much rumored name and near-future setting for the game.

In the description for a trailer, which won't play yet, the game is concisely detailed:

"Pushing the boundaries of what fans have come to expect from the record-setting entertainment franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 propels players into a near future, 21st Century Cold War, where technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare. Pre-order today."

A link to play the trailer sends viewers to a thumbnail of the video, but won't allow the video to play. One of the thumbnails shows what appears to be the words "Los Angeles" written across it and an image of a helicopter flying over a freeway. In the distance you can see high-rises on fire, pillars of smoke and other hovering helicopters.

Over on the images portion of the site are placeholders for two "Coming Soon" pictures. Clicking on them reveals that one is called quadrotor and that the other is called claw. Both images show screenshots obfuscated by television white noise and the words "Coming Soon." With a little help from photo editors it appears that the quadrotor image was one of the screens leaked earlier today. The Claw image appears to show some sort of tank or artillery weapon.

The official site lists a launch date of Nov. 13, 2012. A pre-order page lists PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game. No 3DS or Vita versions are mentioned. Last week, Target confirmed that they would be taking pre-orders for the game starting May 2, saying the shooter would be coming out on Nov. 13.

Guess FPSRussia's last vid was right on the money-- couldn't believe they were actually producing those quad rotors if I hadn't seen it there first!

Worried about the near future setting. I mean, isn't that what the modem warfare games were pushing? I sort of liked the cold war setting and was looking forward to a late 70s, 80s CoD complete with hair metal soundtrack and Rambo references. Looks like my dreams have been dashed yet again!

guess they're going for the Ghost Recon Future Soldier market.

This seems a little more over the top than that...the tank walker looks borderline sci-fi.

...and so it begins.
The guy who shamelessly shilled MW3 starts dissing BLOPS2 based on a screen grab.
Can't wait to see what other negative things you come up with in the coming months.

I can't wait, with last gen tech the only way this can try to stay fresh is to do something like this.

Please please let there be upgradable tips for the new crossbow... I really want incendiary tips so I can watch enemies burn to death

Lol! Even if they don't name it that you know that's what it's going to be.

[Deep inside 3arc headquarters]

V: "Ok guys! You all know we're in a dead heat with those douchebags across the street for 'most annoying killstreak in history'-- we really raised the bar with the RCXD but I gotta say I never saw that recon drone coming..."

Employee 1:"yeah, that thing was awesome!"

[V shoots a nasty look as employee 1 sinks into his chair]

V: "... So you all know that we need a big effort this year to set the record straight and establish us-- 3arc-- as the makers of the most annoying sh!t in CoD! Ideas! Let's hear them!"

Employee 2:"I know, we could have a remote control Johnny 5 robot with machine guns and rocket launchers strapped to him and you could drive him around and..."

V:"You're fired. Any ideas IW didn't think up first?"

[Employee 3 raises his hand cautiously as employee 2 awkwardly collects his things...]

V:"Yeah, fat a$$-- what you got?"

Employee 3: "Wait, I'm not..."

V: "Hit me, chubby!"

Employee 3: "--well I was thinking we could have a care package that delivered a payload of militarized killer bees! Like the ones the military channel the other..."

V: "Bees!? God damn it, dough boy-- drop and give me 20! Next!"

[as employee 3 drops to the floor to struggle with his first pushup employee 4, looking cool and confident raises a single finger]

V: "CJ, what you got for me"

Employee 4: [in a cool and confident voice] "Jet packs!"

V: "CJ, I like where your heads at-- but we need something bigger! Something... More infuriating!

[the boardroom falls silent except for the sounds of employee 3 breathing heavily-- still on his first pushup]

V: "Come on, people! We're 3arc! We gotta have something!"

[employee 5, an attractive young red head leans forward towards the table]

Employee 5: "Well, we are 3arc-- so why don't we just do what we do best?"

[emploee 3: "t t t... wooooo"]

Emploee 5: [now that she has everyone's attention] "Why don't we just steal the recon drone and add a machine gun to it?"

[the room all turns to Von who is quietly standing at the end of the table with his hand to his mouth in a thoughtful pose]

V: "I.... I ****ing love it!!!"

[room erupts into sighs as several employees move to congratulate a smiling employee 5, all but emploee 4 who coolly leans back in his chair to look disinterested]

V: "I love it! Someone get that idea down to art stat! Meeting adjourned! Alright people let's go! Audrey, nice job young lady!"

Employee 5: "Thank you sir!" [she smiles flirtingly]

I LOVED Black Ops....seen the trailer..not too impressed with Black Ops II.

Future Warfare?...I like the 60s WAAAAAAAAY better.

Frank Woods alive...only part I like so far.

Then again it could be great, I guess its all about Treyarch taking chances.
I like the Deus ex/metal gear idea but the graphics in that trailer looks like a 1st gen game, for a game thats coming out in 6months should look some what polished.
Trailer looks awesome. Not going to nit pick the graphics because god knows BF3 looked great on PC but was an absolute nonstarter on console. It looks good enough to me and further more it looks DIFFERENT. Not that the terminator meets Mission Impossible 5 plot line sounds all that original but this is a series that is in desperate need of something-- ANYTHING-- new!
that was a good trailer for Ghost recon: future soldier...
Definitely impressed by that trailer. I've never been 100% behind treyarch's storytelling in their campaigns, but I absolutely love what I'm seeing here. At the very least, the future setting has pretty cool implications for multiplayer. Weapons and gizmos we've never seen before. An AK-47 just isn't going to fit. This can of course go terribly wrong...but I doubt they're going to stray too far from the formula.

Anyways, some really crazy stuff in that trailer:

Woods is coming back to life? What is this, mass effect 2?

At 0:37, you're driving some sort of vehicle, and it says "tap LB squad follow" and "hold LB all follow". The d-pad seems to be linked to weapons and whats obviously one of those drones....and you've got map markers that say secure and protect. So either a SP sequence where you're in charge of a whole squad of machines....or possibly even MP?

The middle east is clearly involved, and looks distinctly persian. Seems like Iran is our enemy, which meshes with the news clips they showed of iran snatching one of UAVs a few months ago.

Seems like you actually get to fly the fighter jet yourself in the campaign. Take that BF3! :P

That crazy ass pistol with the extendable stock hopefully means we'll have some sick customization in MP. Looks like the rifle they're all holding is some sort of XM8 variant/successor. (hell yes!)

I guess when someone hijacks all your vehicles, its time to fall back to....horses?

The silhouette of the dude holding an M16 points to a cold war flashback scene, probably explaining how the hell woods is still alive and young again.

Still another few months till we see a glimpse of the real reason we all play, but cool stuff nonetheless.
Skip to the 3:00 mark if you have already seen the trailer. Not too much new or surprising info. Zombies confirmed. Sounds like they are trying to be innovative.

Funny how IW and 3ARC have completely reversed roles for me.

Roll call has a small featurette...a few tidbits:

Branching storylines and non linear gameplay in campaign
Most ambitious zombies EVAR!

Elite will be deeply integrated...hopefully this separate app nonsense is put to bed.

I'm a bit disappointed. I want COD to be COD, not take off on Ghost Recon/Halo/Red Dead Redemption (horses? Really?). If I wanted to play future stuff, there are games where I can play that. I want modern or at least semi-modern weapons, not walking mechs and the flying version of the RC-XD.

A bit of a let down.

I know exactly what you mean. They've clearly taken over the reigns as the A-Team here. As much as I like MW3, I recognize its not all too much more than a fixed MW2. Maybe that was all IW could really pull off given what happened with their studio imploding, but none of that happened at treyarch. By the time it drops they'll have been grinding away at this for two solid years without interruption. I only hope they've paid attention to what IW did right with MW3, and aren't too proud to incorporate some of it. Things like kill confirmed just HAVE to be in there.

They needed something new to bring some life back to this franchise. I'm sure MW4 will return to roots in the next gen MW4 but I am perfectly ok with 3arch trying some unconventional ideas to give this franchise a much needed shot in the arm.

This does seem pretty far out for just 2025. The walker in particular looks like it could be straight out of battlefield 2142. Its definitely a fine line between cool and corny when they're borderline sci-fi. I dunno how I'm going to feel about it if there's laser guns and cloaking in MP.

Ghost recon future soldier is the new obvious comparison, but it's a radically different game, even though they might be sharing a basic setting. Either way they just put out a modern one, WW2 is still played out...so this is kinda the obvious direction, in a way.

Ok, maybe there is some sanity here....no one is being brought back to life. From joystiq:

Quote:

"This is a direct sequel to Black Ops," Lamia says, adding that one of the central characters from the previous installment, Sgt. Frank Woods, is alive and well in the sequel. Rather than lead off from the previous game, Black Ops 2 will feature two distinct time periods: the 1980s vintage Cold War, and a grounded future in which the United States and China are embroiled in a new Cold War. The idea, Lamia admits, is to show some parity between both periods and allow players to get a better glimpse into the characters involved. Technology and the reasons for battle change, but the objective remains the same: win at all costs.

In Black Ops 2 players will play as former protagonist Alex Mason in the 1980s, and as his son, David Mason, in 2025. The two periods are entwined with the return of Woods and a new villain, Raul Menendez. The story arc spans the Mason family and Woods, and plot out the rise and fall of Menendez. Working with David S. Goyer, who helped co-develop the story for The Dark Knight, Treyarch has decided to shine a more detailed light on its villain. Players will see the breaking point for Menendez in the 1980s to better understand his motivations for terror in the future. We see a man go from good soldier to bitter terrorist, and his story is as important to the entire plot of Black Ops 2 as any other character we meet. "It's a character study. It's a story about these characters," Lamia explains to me later.

Quote:

Throughout the campaign, players will be given the choice to take part in 'Strike Force' missions, with a key objective that can shift the landscape of the greater battle between China and the United States. Sometimes multiple missions will be available, but only one can be selected. Based on the success or failure of these missions -- and you can actually fail to accomplish your objective -- the campaign story will change. There are also choices within levels. In a mission shown at the event, players were given the choice between covering their team with a sniper rifle from a perch, or hitting the ground alongside their squad. According to Lamia, player choice can also lead to the death of key characters during the campaign.

Quote:

In another mission, Los Angeles has been ravaged by unmanned attack drones. David Mason and his partner, Harper, are tasked with escorting the President of the United States when their convoy is attacked by a fleet of these drones. Here we're introduced to a new piece of gear: a scope with the same ability as the full-body scanner found in modern airports.

Maybe there's some truth to the leak?

And finally:

Quote:

To keep things even, and to show off the near-future technology Treyarch has added to Call of Duty, Black Ops 2 multiplayer will take place exclusively in 2025. Though the developer wouldn't go into detail on the franchise's most important component, game design director David Vonderhaar noted it was important for the team to strip the entire multiplayer down to the most important pieces, to ensure Black Ops 2 would have the "best gameplay system that you can have, period." Two multiplayer maps were shown: a destroyed downtown Los Angeles map called 'Aftermath' and a map called 'Yemen,' set in a deserted island town. A more detailed multiplayer reveal is expected later this year.

Bring life back to it? I think it's alive and well. MW3 has been a great success, I'm still playing it daily, same with my son, and if it takes walking mechs to add life to the series, then its got serious problems. I just don't see the need to go so radical when really all the game engine needs were tweaks. Personally, I just want more options in the game, more guns, more and varied maps, more customization. To me, that would have been killer, without having to resort to making Call of Duty: Ghost Recon edition.

I'm the opposite.
I'm ready for a radical change, ready for Treyarch to push the limits again like they did with BLOPS.
MW3 sucked all the fun, interest & good will I had for the series and I'm not the only one. Most of the AVS members who played COD4/MW2/BLOPS nightly for 2-3 hours don't play MW3 anymore despite spending $100 for the game & Elite.
My guess is that they are not the only ones.

It's clear that IW/Sledgehammer are out of ideas.
Treyarch is now the lead studio for the series and considering how good their previous effort was I'm willing to let them run with it.
That said it could be a massive overreach. The walkers do look silly.
I think most COD/MW fans are very conservative in their view of what is appropriate for the series and because of that a serious backlash could be brewing.
Cant wait to play this game.

I predicted a long time ago that because Treyarch was not allowed to produce Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, they would eventually develop Call of Duty: Future Warfare. What I didnt predict was Black Ops. And the very fun "throwback" game it would become. Black Ops was popular, because the weapons were still up to date and didnt have WWII, been there done that feeling.

With the popularity of shows like Future Weapons on Military Channel.. there are plenty of awesome "real world" ideas out there for them to use. I just hope they dont overdo it and go all Halo on the series. Reality is.. as long as they keep the COD gameplay & mechanics.. you could make Call of Duty: Medieval Warfare.. that uses swords, arrows & crossbows. And it would be an insanely popular title!
