What is the intent/purpose for your system?

mostly going for an obnoxiously loud system for my Shop. my shop is all for personal use and i might want to throw some party's. I know its a bit overkill but you never know what might come up and where you might need it...

Search "renegade parties" and scope out my thread on my system. I'd link you directly but I'm on my cell phone. See if that is along the lines you are going for.

Where are you located?

Scoops are **** for FR and phase, very one notey with not much below 50, vented will serve you better for sound quality. If Peavey speakers are available near you you can get 2 low riders for the price of one 18tbx100, and build 4 dual vented cabinets for higher output and power handling, as well as better sound quality in the same form factor.

What amplification and DSP are you planning on using?

The most important question is... What style of music you are going to play?

QSC PL380 PowerLight 3 Series Power Amplifier
Crown Macro-Tech 9000i Power Amplifier
Crest 10001 power amp

need to decide on amps but those are some of my options for the 18"s

i listen/play everything...

Nice, I'm across the pond in Rochester NY.

I'll get the specs for the amps together and see what I can come up with.

this is what i have been looking at for the subs Crest CA18/10001, Crown Macrotech MA5000VZ/9000i, QSC 5050/PL380

Do you have any gear on hand or are you purchasing this whole setup from the ground up?

buying everything from the ground up.
at least i have lots of carpentry experience and all the tools needed for building the cabs...

many are not familiar with the hog scoops or the es-18 including me.

do you have some links for them?

my first thought is that you have too much overkill there.

4 18tbx100's in simple ported 8 cubic foot cabs tuned to 28hz gives you 99db 1w1m average from 30-100hz, which translates into 109db at 10 watts, 119db at 100 watts, and 129db at 1000 watts and max out around 135db average (~2000 nominal watts per driver)

they will play clean well into the midrange, so if you cross them anywhere from 100hz to 150hz or so, you will take almost all the excusion strain off your "mains". a simple two-way per side above that should be fine.

a 75-90 degree horizontal horn would probably work better and a 1.5" or so exit c.d. will give you more top end extension.

do you really know how loud you are spec'ing your system to be?

ok, so the hog is sort of a tapped exponential horn and the es is a standard front loaded horn.

how do the frequency response sweeps look or model?

you lost me... I'm a carpenter not an audio tech.
over the past 2 weeks i have been doing a lot of research.
this is what i came up with.
Google speakerplans.com and check the gsub. Ditch the scoops.
"you lost me... I'm a carpenter not an audio tech."

ahh...ok.

what i was asking is if anyone had taken a measurement of the frequency response for each of those designs.

short of having an actual measurement, sometimes a computer model can come quite close. so in lieu of an actual, i was asking if there was a computer model of the frequency response for each of those designs.

you don't have to spend the kind of money on amps that you mention for the performance that you want...not by a long shot...there are many other 'kick arse' solutions.

if you don't mind backing up the bus for a moment, what kind of an area would you like to cover with "concert level" spl? how wide and how deep, how many people?

that will really help narrow the requirements down.

i really like the idea of scoops... they look fun to build.
I know its over kill but you never know where i might need them.
Scoops aren't overkill, the have quite crap sound quality except when reproducing a few select genres. Vented will be just as loud and sound significantly better.

It is DIY, so build whatever you wish, just take it under advisement.

What are the genres most commonly used with scoops...?
I enjoy listening to rap/hip-hop, reggae/ska, reggae-ton, dub-step, house, heavy metal, and classical guitar.
Reggae and dub made scoops famous, they mainly shine with kick drum reproduction. Any sort of pitched synth or frequency below around 50 is trouble with them. House, dubstep, r&b, rap will suffer, most especially dubstep.

They have a loose one note boomy quality that can work to get loud but lacks definition, especially for pitch bent synths.

how do you think the es-18's will do?

will the ES-18's give me the kick i want?
Most likely, even though they are an unknown quantity. The one area I haven't played with yet is horn kickbins, I haven't needed to as my ported direct radiators work a treat.
