PSB T6 owners I'd like your advice...

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
I'm currently in a small room, only 12 x 14 but at some point (years, not months) I will be going to a larger room, say 14 x 24. Will the T6's be overpowering in my current small room? I will not be playing at insane volume levels because I live in an apartment, so speakers must perform well at lower volumes as well. These will be for 60% home theater and 40% music. Any ideas, advice and suggestions are appreciated. They will be powered by an Onkyo TX-NR3009 or a Marantz SR7005. Thanks in advance for your help.

To my knowledge, the size of the speaker is not relevant to the "overpowering" of a room (if you want to call it that).

In other words, any speaker played loudly in a small room can sound "overpowering", its size doesn't really factor in. The SPL it produces does though.

FWIW, I don't think you'll have an issue, especially since you're not planning to listen at reference levels. Now I don't claim to be an authority on the subject so If I've mistated anything, please correct me world.

PS. I own the T6's in Dark Cherry, lovely speakers. I have them in a room about roughly 11x16 or so, but this room is wide open to another room on one side and to a kitchen on the other.

While digging through another thread I found this info from another user. Thought you may appreciate;

In case of any small room, you get 'room gain' effects and some room modes (multi-reflections of sound waves) that result in sound gain at lower end of the sound range. That typically results in not pleasant sound, with low frequency boom and exaggerated bass. Bookshelves typically cannot reproduce lower end of the range well, thus tend to sound better in smaller rooms. That happens because: (a) No reproduction of bass, thus no problems with bass; (b) room gain helps a little bit; (c) Some people can easily accept the sound without the very end of low range. If you have floorstanding speakers, you get better bass, with all the room issues. If you can deal with room issues, you get better sound. If not, then you hear all the unpleasanties. In my case, I use Onkyo receiver with Audyssey MultEQ XT. That is a good system that corrects issues with the room. Thus I can enjoy floorstanding speakers.

T6 tower speakers?
If so the space is way too small for them I've tried it out.Tower speakers need space to truly shine.
Go with the bookselfs T6s or actually called the B6.
I guess you could also think of the perhaps the Imagine Minis or the Imagine B.
Even the Synchrony 2 bookselfs at $1479 a pair. Since the T6 towers $1300 pair.

Recent price cut on the Synchrony 2.
