Bought a plasma.. Not happy

Hi guys,

After about a month researching plasmas and getting the highly scoring Panasonic 55gt30, I'm a bui disappointed by the screens dull colors and low panel brightness even after putting in pro settings. Dim lit scenes just look too dim if room is not completely dark even on vivid settings.

Having said that, I'm thinking about going to LED. Budget is around $2k looking for a quality 55 inch set to keep for next 5-8 yrs. I was looking at the Samsung 55d7900, what else do you guys recommend in the 2k price range???

Pro settings as in calibration?

Have you considered a HX929 in 55 for around 2300?

I don't know what the problem is with your set (probably settings) but I have the same set and it is bright and vibrant. Something amiss.

Plasma sets deliver an outstanding picture in a dark environment.

The more ambient light you add to the environment, the less outstanding it becomes.

Sony NX720 is about $1500 for the 55. Edge lit but the leap to full array might not be worth it to you.

I used the recommended settings from Dave (i believe he's a reputable member in the plasma forum). While the picture was excellent, the colors seemed flat, and any person of color looked a bit dark to the point where face details were washed out. Turning up the brightness obviously killed the black levels. Setting the panel to bright mode actually delivered a dimmer picture with Dave's settings. Vivid was bright enough but killed the color of the image. Also, anytime the screen went to white, the Screen got significantly dimmer vs when only a small portion of the picture being white. I'm guessing this is for energy savings and panel temp safeguards. Note I had all Eco settings off.

While the brightness of the calibrated picture was excellent in a completely dark room, any light caused the picture to be a little dim for my taste.

Is the HX929 pretty much the best set of 2011? I'm assuming it's full array LED are there any competitors with full array?

The 929 is one of the best LCD sets of 2011, The 60" Sharp Elite is considered by most to be the best, however it's a lot more expensive, LG has been making some sets with full array local dimming, however they cancel some of them, change model numbers, I gave up on trying to keep track of them a while ago.

I have a VT25, I have also been very dissatisfied with it.

Noticed the same thing on budget plasma.i do remember before when you went in the store and the plasmas looked brighter.

LCD to me looks better with lights on vs off, although only slightly.

5 to 8 years should be about right on a flat panel.
