Dumping DVHS shows into .ts files via Firewire

I have hundreds of DVHS tapes recorded back in the days of the DISH Network modulator.

I frequently get audio dropouts when playing back through the JVC VCR.

Is there an easy way to dump the dvhs data into .ts file into my hard drive via Firewire so I play them on my media player?

The DVHS tapes can be also fragile and I want to preserve some of the these 7-years old HD shows

Yes:
Uno:
Windows-You'll need 32 bit Win XP/7 OS + Firewire Tape Subunit Drivers. [No Win 64 bit will not work, dont bother asking.]
The Win 7 Firewire stack needs to be downgraded to the XP stack as I recall.
The ExDues driver package should do the trick.
OSX-Download and install the Apple FirewireSDK 26.

Dos:
Windows-Install CapDVHS(free)/TSReader($$). Fire up whichever program you pick.
OSX-Fire up AVCVideoCap (Part of the SDK).


Tres:
Win/OSX-Start capping to your hearts content and enjoy the bitstream goodness.

If your recordings are flagged anything other than copy freely, you will not be anle to transfer them because they will be encrypted, and requires a security handshake between devices for proper playback, and in which said security handshake will not occur because no computers implements the encryption protocol (by design of the content owners).

Thank you for the response. So I cannot use 64-bit Windows 7 to do this?

I tried using CAPDVHS on an old XP machine last night. It seemed like it was capturing the data from the CapDVHS into a mpeg file but the file wasn't readable by VLC or anything else I've tried.. not quite sure what I'm doing wrong. The CapDVHS program is over 5 years old. Do I need to get the $99 version of TSReader to accomplish what I need to do?

If you used an XP machine and got a file of several gigabytes per hour of content which does not playback in VLC, then this suggest the recordings are flagged as either copy once or copy no more, in which case you cannot dump them the computer unless you write a program to decrypt the 5C encryption (not very likely, but go ahead and try).

Your only other realistic option is to playback through analog component HD outputs and capture this using something like the Hauppauge HDPVR.
