I think I may post on the Oppo 93 thread to see if anyone else spots this. Dave Vaughan actually saw this on his LCD but not on his Plasma/PS3 combo. It seems that projectors regardless of the BD player do not show this.

Paul

I'm watching on a 65" Panny plasma, ISF/THX calibrated. It's most definitely an encoding issue, I've seen enough of that to know it when I see it. Smaller displays might be harder to catch it on.

In the early part of the sand storm there's a couple shots looking down narrow alleys with a lot of variation in the color of the dust, the posterization is pretty obvious but only for a few seconds. I thought I was watching on DirecTV for a bit. There's also macro-blocking in those scenes, but it's much less apparent due to the nature of the images. I can see it on my 24" LCD PC monitor also.

I am not surprised by this. My Panny plasma looks terrific most of the time but critical viewing reveals such issues. On the other hand, my Sim2 Lumis 3 Chip DLP really gives the best representation of what's on the disc. I've never seen a plasma/LCD that comes close to displaying (without creating aberrations) accurate Blu Ray.

Can everyone post which version of the disc they watched and whether or not they saw this video issue?

Someone over in the Oppo 93 thread brought up the idea that the BB exclusive disc had more special features on the BD disc, which could, in theory, have screwed up some compression issues.

I assume that Ralph didn't watch the Best Buy edition as he got it early.

What about Dave?

I watched the Best Buy exclusive BD on an Oppo 93 and Panny 7000U, and I saw blockiness in the black and dark backgrounds.

I have the Best Buy edition as well.

Well, there goes that theory!

Netflix edition. They all appear to have the same encode for the main movie.

We all know that DTS Master and Dolby True HD can deliver the goods on bass slam and sheer uncut dynamics But the addition of audiophile fidelity has tamed the beast and cleaned it up and made it presentable Kudos to Dolby True HD on this one. It's now on my top five of all time

There are still people out there, that don't know that they actually listen to the original PCM track when they equipment decodes those lossles codec's, and their use has nothing to do with any bass slam or dynamics, their sole purpose is reduce the size of the file.

Got the rental today,
i'm pretty impress with the lfe so far. I was kinda hoping to be dts hd. Okay, getting back to the movie turning up volume.
Almost ordered this on Directv Cinema the other night. Glad I waited as I can pick it up at BB and get the full lossless audio. Seems that the audio is well regarded on this movie. Should be fun to give the speakers a good workout.

no question aq is top notch...one of the best i have heard.
If this turns out to be true, it is bad news so far as I am concerned. I will definitely see whatever picture Bird directs next.
Mr Cruise always stated he wanted different directors for each sequel so each mission would/should have a different feel. I think that is what keeps things going here...

Though, I'd break that rule to get Mr. Bird back.

^ His (Bird's) synopsis of the franchise (and differing directors) is pretty much dead-on.

Directors are overrated anyway (yep, they are).

Take a great plot, solid characters, well-written script, talented actors, and these days: A-level special effects and CGI and the VAST majority of directors are like good umpires/referees: virtually transparent. Many directors have frankly said it themselves.

Don't believe me? Make a list of your 20 favorite films (don't cheat either: do it without thinking about the director). Bet you'll end up with at least a dozen different directors.

l'll do one quick right from the heart, with 20 (not a definitive list) over the last few years that I've enjoyed (directors added after listing):

Walk the Line: Mangold
Warrior: O' Connor
Drive: Refn
No Country For Old Men: Coen
Doubt: Shanley
The Town: Affleck
The Fighter: Russell
3:10 to Yuma: Mangold
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead: Lumet
MI4: Bird
The Next Three Days: Haggis
Burn After Reading: Coen
The Descendants: Payne
Gran Torino: Eastwood
The Wrestler: Aronofsky
The Dark Knight: Nolan
The Hurt Locker: Bigelow
Valkyrie: Singer
American Gangster: Scott
Star Trek: Abrams

20 films, 18 directors.

There are a crap-load of directors in hollywood, and another crap-ton that won't wreck the foundation of a good/great film. How much better or worse they make it is not only arguable, but fantastically difficult (really, impossible) to quantify.

The MI series will be fine. Woo didn't wreck MI2 (which was a bit underrated IMO) it simply lacked a lot of quality in the aforementioned areas.

Flame away.

Greetings,

This all makes for interesting discussion however I would prefer that it not stray too far from the topic of this thread.

Thanks.

Got this a couple of nights ago based on Ralph's review and Wow! Movie was certainly entertaining and the LFE was incredible. The Kremlin explosion was a new experience in 'interactive cinema' as it was sudden and with the Submersive HP, when the ground in the movie jumped/shook, so did the floor in my room (enough to knock things over) LOL! Loved the audio in this.

I saw this last night and I LOVED it! The audio is first rate. The Incredibles is one of my all time favorite movies so it's no surprise to me Brad Bird made another terrific movie. I admit to being slightly distracted by Tom's moobs, but other than that an almost perfect film.
Finally got around to seeing Ghost Protocol a few days ago and must agree that the audio and video are both very good, or better. There were a number of scenes that caught me off guard causing me to jump a little. The movie itself is good as well, and the blu-ray disc is a very worthy addition to one's library, especially if you are a fan of Mission Impossible.
I will be picking up this movie on BluRay, but based upon what I've read on this thread so far, I have a question to ask. Is there a particular version of this that is better than others? I get the feeling that the Best Buy edition may be different than those available at Amazon or Costco (both have the movie for $22), so I thought that I should check with you guys before I buy the movie. Thanks for your help.

thought this was a decent popcorn flick but its really getting more praise than it deserves... maybe because there are so many awful movies recently that even a decent movie is considered great.

What I loved about Oceans type of movies is the chemistry between the casts, which I think this movie completely lacked. None of the characters in this movie seemed to jive with one another, even with a long running time there just wasn't much character development at all to care about any one of them.

I disagree....Pegg and Cruise had chemistry.

I was gonna say Cruise and Renner. He he he

I rented it and watched it twice, other than Tom Cruise playing himself... the others just seemed to be reading a script. Lack of cast chemistry jumped out at me.

Then they did their jobs perfectly! There wasn't supposed to be chemistry. They were a 'new' team, who didn't see eye to eye.

^ Correct. The four not necessarily melding was part of the essence of the scenario.
