Question about spyder4 colorometer

would the spyder4 express coupled with the AVS rec.709 DVD be fine to calibrate a TV or would i be completely stupid to even attempt this? would it be better to go with the spyder4 pro (which would be the absolute highest i can go in terms of price)?

i would *like* to be able to properly calibrate my TV. i've done some adjustments using the AVS rec.709 basic settings images (just brightness, contrast adjustments, nothing in the color management or 2/20 point IRE sections) but i don't have a lot of disposable income to be able to afford the higher end colorometers/software.

i mean, things certainly look *okay*, but i can definitely tell that the greyscale needs to be tweaked, and i know i can't accurately do it by eye.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

You may want to hold off on your decision until next week when we have announced our new DIY calibration kit rental program.

You may also want to see what controls your tv has. If has the very basic controls, it may not be a worthwhile investment.

it's an LG 50PV400, so it does have some pretty "advanced" controls - standard brightness/contrast/colour/tint/sharpness controls as well as 2 or 20 point IRE, and colour management system. it also has colour standard settings (standard or wide) and white balance setting (cool, medium or warm).

so far, i just have the brightness/contrast/sharpness/colour/tint adjusted. i have not adjusted any of the IRE or CMS settings (they are all set to 0).

if there's a way to adjust the IRE settings by eye to get a neutral greyscale without the use of a meter, that'd be really great, but i know that's not exactly possible (or at the very least - difficult to achieve).

set the color temp to the warmest preset, that should get you closest to correct without the needed tools.

hey thanks, i'll certainly keep this in mind should i decide to go with a more advanced calibration. i'm pretty happy with how it looks right now, but i would obviously *love* to have it perfect (or as close to perfect as possible).
