TC-P50UT50 or PN51E550

So i'm going to get a new Plasma before the end of the week and these are the two I have narrowed it down to TC-P50UT50 or PN51E550.

I'm having a real hard time choosing.

I would say the number one thing i'm looking for is picture quality for gaming.

Picture quality comes in many facets of course. In order of importance i'd say most important is clear motion image, followed by vivid color. I like accurate color but what I really want is a TV that can display lot's of colors and shades well.

I don't want to see any blurring or color banding.

The Samsung has a much better feature set.

I like the idea of having a web browser on the TV. These days I watch more streaming video than I do cable TV. Currently I have a computer I use to stream to my TV but I have always wanted to simplify that. And Samsung i'm guessing has more/better Aps. Also built in WiFi. As well as more HDMI ports at 3vs2 which is still less than I use on my current TV (4)

The Panasonic I think may have better picture. And that is what really matters.

I'm curious about the 2500 Focused Field Drive. Is this real, or just a manufacturer gimmick? Does it really improve motion clarity over the Samsung?

Which TV has better color?

I really appreciate your advice, I know both are pretty new sets but I hope a few of you will have opinions on both or helpful information.

Thanks

I am also looking for advice about the two TVs mentioned by the OP, as well as the Samsung PN51D6500 and LG 50PZ950 (with black pot tweak). I don't know which of the four (UT50, E550, D6500, PZ950) I should choose. I haven't found too much info on the UT50 or E550.

I am in the same boat of wanting the best picture quality above all else.

So today is the final day, I am going to decide today. No one has any advice?

I could also get a TC-P55ST30. All three are the exact same price.

These panels are still quite new -- excepting the ST30 of course -- and sit in the lower range of each line up, and thus don't generate the "buzz" that the higher models do.

Do not recall seeing a "professional review" of either of the 2 newer models, but would expect both to have highly reflective screens, in case glare is an issue for you.

IR reports are all over the map: we don't game, but our 60" ST30 still seems more prone to short-term IR than either of the two older Pan plasmas we have in the house. Other owners don't seem to have any problems.
Still, personally - and as much as I like the overall PQ of a plasma - I would not buy a plasma panel knowing that it would be used extensively for gaming.

Have you considered the ST50? It's supposed to be better than last years VT30.

I'd love to buy a st50 but it's more expensive. The funny thing is all last year I wanted to get a 50st30 for under 1k and now I have the option of a 55st30 and i'm debating it... wierd.

This is such a tough choice, the Samsung has such a nice feature set. Built in WiFi and a Web Browser (which I would use a lot).

But every one seems to love there Panasonics for PQ.

Oh, and thanks for the advice, I am concerned about IR.

This would be my first plasma My TV's get a lot of use and it's not at all unheard of for me to leave the netflix screen up for hours or have a marathon gaming session.

This is definitely my biggest fear with Plasma. I don't even think about that stuff at all with my LED.

That's pretty much the same reason I went with the UT50. I just couldn't see myself spending $300 more for a tv that has a few advantages that just don't make a big difference to ME.

I've seen the the 64e550, D6500, 65st30, GT31, PA4500 & PA6500. IMHO I think the 50ut50 looked better than all of those TV's at BB. I know, I know you can't go by what you see at BB but if thats all you have it's all you have! The GT31 was below the 50ut50 and could compare those at the same time. If I didn't know that the LG's have bad Blacks I would rate them pretty high on the list. I just seem to like how they look. I will say the LG's seem to refresh much faster than all the other TV's on the wall at BB. The LG's always change to the next clip faster than any of the other TV's. I would guess that would be good indicator of how fast the TV is for gaming? Not a gamer so I'm just guessing on that. BTW I just ordered a 50gt50 yesterday.

That's an interesting observation about the LG sets.

Enjoy your new set.

Hi,

I need to ask a question about TC-P50UT50. Doesn't this TV have a web browser? I know it has vierra connect but we would be limited to the number of apps in vierra connect.

Thanks

Pretty sure you need to step up to the ST50 and beyond for the web browser. I have a UT50 (as of last week) and have not noticed the web browser anywhere, just Viera connect apps. That said, I have no use for a web browser on a TV, especially a plasma as the buzzing with a white background with no audio coming out (web browsing) would be really annoying.

Looks like the buzzing sound is a big issue. How annoying/loud is it. Is there a way to hear how it sounds?

Search for Panasonic Plasma buzzing in YouTube to get an idea. All white backgrounds are the worst/loudest by far, especially if you are alone in an otherwise silent room. Doesn't help that the Smart Viera (app) menu has a bright background as well, not sure what they were thinking with that.

The Samsung E550 has nice features, but the Panasonic UT50 has better overall pic quality and video processing. Plus better blacks. To get comparable video processing in the Samsung series, you have to step up to the E6500. And a higher price point. Images are not as sharp on the E550, and the screen has a very glossy LCD/LED like look. Very bright. While the UT50 is a bit glossy, the images are solid and you don't get that LED effect. Fortunately, I have not had a buzzing problem with my UT50. Now if I was looking at the E6500, I would also consider the ST50 at that price point.

Aken, if you ever visit this thread again, which one did you end up choosing? I am now in the exact same position, trying to make that choice between the same two models. Trying to gather as much info as possible to help make the decision. I realize the Samsung has a few better features, but if the Panasonic's picture quality is actually better (I'm trying to figure out if it truly is), then I think I'd rather go with the Panasonic. Just wondered what you chose and how satisfied you were with your choice.

To tylerSC, your comment on this question may be a very helpful in my decision, though that would depend on exactly what the statements in your post are based on. Even months later I still have been having trouble finding a solid answer on whether or not the picture quality of the Panasonic UT50 is truly superior to that of the Samsung E550. If you could please inform me as to how much you have seen/read to back up what you have said, I would appreciate it.
For the time being, I am still leaning toward the Panasonic due to the apparent probability of the picture quality actually being noticeably better. If that were not the case, I would possibly choose the Samsung. At this time, they are both the same price at Best Buy.
