All these things are doing is turning the wiring 90 degrees - it's not like they have some sort of choke that blocks certain signals - HDMI works fully whether it's a cable or an angle adapter.

FYI, I bought these port savers from Monoprice which work great to relieve stress from heavy cables plugged directly into devices. Out of ten I had no issues before last night, where the one plugged directly into my GT50 apparently failed to pass handshake info. After removing it and plugging directly into the Panasonic I was able to display content from my AVR.

Note: while my attempts at getting ARC to work were not successful, these were taken out during testing process - there is no direct correlation that these pigtails contributed to the issue.

Did others receive an update yesterday? I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned (although maybe it has?). Does anyone know what was resolved?

TIA.

I got an update on my ST30, my understanding is it is only viera connect related.

There is nothing wrong with the TV so don't return it. That "snow" you're seeing along the top is a "data strip" that comes from the broadcaster and/or the particular content - mostly seen on SD channels but you'll also see it sometimes on the HD channels on some 4:3 commercials and news stories etc.

Historically this strip has been hidden on Tube TVs and on earlier flat panel TVs that had a little overscan, but when the TV is in HD Size 2 mode and set to FULL it becomes visible. Switching to HD Size 1 will zoom the image about 5% and hides it, but it's better to leave the TV in HD Size 2 (which is zero overscan) and just ignore it when you see it.

We have now had this one for about 2 weeks and I have never seen IR. I don't look for it and I don't examine the picture closeup either.

So if i am carefull about the content i am watching, is it OK running the tv in preset THX cinema (without further lowering brightness/contrast) for the breakin period?

I want to break the TV in quickly so is it ok to leave it on something like HBO (has no logo's or black bars) for hours on end for the first week? Or will this cause the TV to over heat?

You can set it how you like and leave it on for years without problem. Just limit the amount of time static images are displayed to limit Image Retention, especially early in the tv's life.

didn't know it was a data strip. i didn't think it was tv but couldn't be 100% sure. usually seen on pbs broadcasts but does appear on some others.
didn't really want to exchange this plasma cause to me its 'perfect' in every other way

thank you Randy

Ok not being able to have audio through the receiver during streaming videos is really getting annoying. I even tried streaming from my PC with an ethernet wire and the same thing happens, video but no audio with either ARC/Optical.

Can Panasonic correct this via firmware upgrade?

I have no idea? I've tried every possible way I can think of to get this to work but it's a no go. I understand when it comes to mkv with a non-supported audio codec not working but it seems to be almost everything I throw at it. The TV does give you a heads up when you highlight a thumbnail of the video, showing a little speaker with a red X.
Maybe someone can chime in with another idea

I just installed my 55GT50 yesterday, connected it to WIFI (UVerse, easy/peasy), and it updated. my GT's mfg date is March of 12, so I imagine it had a couple of updates needed... anyway, updated and all is great. Absolutely no issues at all.

No audio at all? I get the stb audio from the avr and apps audio through the tv.

I moved the connection to hdmi 1 and connected the optical. I have to then change my avr to the optical connection av1 and it works fine. I don't think that moving the hdmi to hdmi 1 had anything to do with it though.

Which avr do you have again?

I was trying to tell you that you really don't need to be careful beyond displaying static content. Don't worry about it so much, stop freaking out your wife (it took effort for me not to do the same w/hubby ) and your tv should not overheat.

I believe that Value Electronics and others who seriously run slides do so nonstop. Robert, owner of VE, told us last year about an incident where the police were called out, because of the flashing colors coming from his store during the night, some people thought that something odd was going on over there. He was preparing newly received tvs for the shootout and some for delivery.

Unless you plan to put the tv through a torture test with gaming or play a static image all day, I highly doubt you'll see anything that will concern you. If by any chance you do, which I really highly doubt, just know that it will go away quickly by playing regular content or an animated/cartoon dvd/blu-ray.

Buyer beware for those ordering from Newegg. Ordered my 60GT50 from them and added white glove service (via AIT Shipping Co.). TV just got here after tw weeks and AIT didn't know it was white glove delivery and wanted to leave the TV at front door, no unboxing, no testing, no nothing...

I refused and the driver put in back on the truck. Now I'm fighting with Newegg since it is their vendor who botched this delivery.

I should have gone with Amazon, especially now since Amazon pricing has come down to what I paid Newegg.

So close to plasma bliss and yet so far...

As Randy said, just select HD Size 1 for that input. I have an IPTV (Telus) connected via HDMI and saw on one of the HD channels what looks like alternating black and white blocks on the lower 1/2", was only happening on that channel. Switched to HD Size 1 (it was set to Size 2 by default) and it's all good. I have to say, mine didn't look like snow as there was a pattern to it. But I'm sure it's some form of digital snow.

I haven't played around with the Smart Viera features but I'm pretty sure during initial set up the TV wifi connection was set up successfully.

Does the TV check for firmware updates on its own and display a message or do you have to do it manually? I haven't seen anything come up yet on its own. Also, how do you check what version is on there?

FWIW, my 60GT50 has a May 2012 manufacture date so it might still be up to date from factory but I'm not sure.

EDIT: Disregard post. Found it in Menu > Network settings. It was version 1.0 and it updated to the 1.130.

I saw a listing for 2 pr end at around that same price yesterday and there are more 2 pr bundles available still, one ends tonight (got my eye on them). Buying on ebay and paying through Paypal is barely any risk to the buyer these days and the financial risk is no greater than if an Amazon order gets lost, it takes a bit of time to resolve but nothing more than that. Also, shopping on ebay, paying with your credit card through Paypal is zero risk to buyer at all.

Next time, try to make them wait while you get the seller on the phone or make them call their office.

Last year I bought 4 pairs of Samsung C series 3D glasses through an EBAY online seller in China. When i got a refund for the TV (color banding defect), Samsung would not refund the money for the glasses because they were not bought from a official liscenced dealer, even though i had a receipt.

So i am out the $300. I am gonna try to sell them myself.

I guess i really can't complain because Samsung gave me $300 more than i paid for the original TV! I took it and put it towards my new 55'' GT50.

Can an owner of a 50GT50 tell me if the optical audio output is On with the built-in speakers On and with the built-in speakers Off?

Since I don't hear nearly as well as my wife, I have been using wireless headphones when we watch TV together. Many TV sets, especially those with a headphone jack, only provide audio output if the speakers are turned off. I have overcome this obstacle via a switch and additional cables. If the optical audio output were always On I could simplify the setup by using a Gefen GTV-DD-2-AA digital audio decoder. It would also enable me to add a soundbar if we don't like the built-in speakers.

BTW any opinions about the Panasonic SC-HTB550?

Thanks

Hey guys,

I wanted to kind of get a feel for what advanced video processing setups you guys all have. If you've applied D Nice's settings or are just using THX there's no need to reply. If you are using custom settings through your own calibration whether you used tools (like WoW) or not please let me know what you've got going when it comes to these following settings:

In "Picture" Menu

C.A.T.S.:
Video NR:

In "Pro Settings" Menu

Color Space:
Black Extension:
Gamma Adjustment:
Panel Brightness:
Contour Emphasis:
AGC:

In "Advanced Picture" Menu

Block NR:
Mosquito NR:
Motion Smoother:
Black Level:

It would be awesome if we could get as many people to put what they've got when it comes to all the video processing options this TV provides. Maybe that way we can get a feel for what really works best overall. I'll quote my own post and let everyone know what I've got after calibrating with WoW. Thanks in advance to any of you who chip in!

In order to play MKV's on my tv from my PC I use a server client called mezzmo(not affiliated). It's a free download with a 15 day trial. I load the program and allow it's permission request that pops up and point to my folders.

I go to the tv and see winPC media payer(built into win7 ultimate/pro) and mezzmo. I can click mezzmo and the mkv's and m2ts files show up with a preview. Any avi/xvid/mp4 has to be played using the win server while m2ts plays on either.

When I high-lite a file the movie starts in the preview window and I get full sound from all the speakers using either client just like when you start the movie. There's more clients out there that you can use but this one is solid. I had the no sound icon until the tv sorted out all the thumbs. I have a 30 series but your 50 should be similar. My AVR is just a panny htib so it's fully compatible. What model AVR do you have? Not sure if this will help but give it a try.
Is the purpose of ARC so you can hear audio from the TV thru the AVR if using the 'video watching' apps on the TV?
Thanks for the replies guys/girls. My receiver is a Panasonic BTT750, it's a home theater setup. I think someone mentioned that when the thumbnail previews of the files are playing, it's in stereo which is why we get audio but then when you actually play the desired file, the audio just cuts out and you're forced to use the TV speakers. I'm trying to stream from my PC to the TV but I want the audio to come from the AVR, not the TV speakers. I have TVersity media server but I still haven't tried it yet. I'll report back on that.

No one here has distortion with the TV speakers once you go passed 17? It's like a tinny sound as if there were tape or something over the speaker ports. I see people talking about it all over the AVforums for both the GT & VT.

I don't think your going to find a universal solution for what's best because whats best for me probably isn't going to be best for anyone else. Its all personal preference and unit dependant. Calibration with a machine is unique to each set since each set is a little different. The default THX modes are probably as close to best overall as your going to get since they were uniquely calibrated at the factory for each set and not just a generic set of parameters fed into every set like you are trying to find.

If I'm wrong and the THX modes are just generic settings for the entire line then I deny writing this post

Correct, we do the same for are Pre-Calibrated units. However for a personal unit, I have never broken in a unit. I use as is, everyone has a preference.
