Guys, there is no (panasonic) plasma that can do 30fps games without judder / image doubling! Higher models could be even worst, maybe other brands plasma has special 30fps game smoother option. Go LCD that with blur/smoothdown the 30fps judder/doubling.

On plasma with 30fps games, don't use GAME MODE, try other picture options to blur down the image.
Set Motion Smoother:strong, Block NR:on, Mosquito NR:on, Video NR:strong etc.

Don't use HDMI, use (analog) Component video or video to get "blur" effect to simulate the LCD tv!

the judder isnt what im most annoyed with. im most annoyed with the rainbow colors that pop up all over my screen during fast movement. any bight or white areas typically have a bright blue and bright yellow double image pop out of them during fast movement, as illustrated in that video i posted.

I have a 50" gt50 and game on it. I have never had the "rainbow effect" like you say u have with the st50. Like iBrad said, I don't use game mode, but I also turn all the extra stuff off such as Block NR etc. for fear of increased input lag. IBrad I'm also curious as to why u say not to use hdmi- please elaborate.

Thanks for the reply.

Are there any of you with warranties? if so who do you have your protection agreement with? how would you rate bestbuy's protection plan?
i'm contemplating whether or not to get bestbuy's plan.

does anyone know I noticed a like invisble shield on the screen like something over the glass is there like a filter or something on this, and I still cant figure out if these glasses come with 2pairs for 80 bucks lol.

On a side note wtf don't these tvs come with glasses lol.

I hated the new LEDs cause of bleeding but they don't have ir or anything to worry about when gaming. Then I read the new neo plasmas don't like those slides cause they change fast and can cause more harm then good. I am just really confused when I was at best buy the guy told me to avoid plasma cause they have to many issues and are a dying tech. However I always read they have better pic and don't lag at games. They is so much info that its crazy. I just don't know lol its very confusing.

Don't get burned out over-researching your purchase. At some point you will need to compromise and accept some of the limitations of whatever you buy.

I don't game but from what I have read it appears that gamers are expecting too much from TV sets these days. A friend of a friend spent MORE on a top shelf graphics card for his gaming rig than I spent on my 60GT50. I think if your main goal is gaming you would do well by spending some reading time in a gaming forum and find out which TV's give the best performance in view of the fact that none of them were specifically designed for gaming.

The sales drone at BB simply does not know what he is talking about. Plasma was the first flat panel tech to hit the markets and yes they had some "issues" LCD played catch-up for a decade because there was no manufacturing process to produce low cost large size lcd panels. On top of that, the early LCD sets had some "issues" of there own (including the worst PQ ever seen on a TV) As LCD grew in size and went down in price, it began to take away market share from plasma. Not because it was better, but because it was cheaper. Now, we are seeing the trend reverse. The top end LCD sets have become significantly more expensive than comparable high-end plasmas. Plasma has always had a significant lead in PQ and now that gap is getting larger with the introduction of LED edge lighting that has further reduced the PQ of LCD TV's relative to further improvements in plasma. When you add together the lower cost and better PQ of plasma you get the perfect recipe for plasma regaining growth relative to LCD.

The growth of LCD at the expense of plasma was 100% driven by pricing at the stores. Now that is reversing.

Both plasma and LCD "have too many issues." In my opinion, a new plasma set has fewer "issues" than LCD, gives a far better PQ, and costs less. Eventually OLED will drive a spike through the hearts of both plasma and LCD and OLED will have its own set of problems rolleyes.gif

There is no film on the glass surface. If you look across the surface at a very low angle it should look like a sheet of glass with not quite a mirror like reflection.

Yes it does have a filter, two of them. The first filter is behind the glass surface and removes most of the dull pre-discharge glow and gives the TV its ultimate black level. The second filter is the louver type anti-reflection filter to help remove reflections from overhead lights and reflections from ceilings. This is a photo of the louver filter I took a couple thousand posts ago wink.gif

GT50 Filter.jpg

The glasses come in individual boxes. That being said, I have seen packs of 1, 2, 4, and 6 "pairs" of glasses being offered at a package price. "Pairs" of glasses means ONE unit. Just like a "pair" of pants means one "pant" and not two units of pants. The English language can be vey context driven.

Where specifically are you looking at ? What specifically does the offer say ? Theses glasses go for about $60 new per unit. I bought mine "used" from an Amazon marketplace merchant. They were 100% new. The problem at the beginning was that people were buying the new BlueTooth glasses for there old TV's. They won't work. So they return them and then they are sold as "used" even though they may never have removed from the box. I can't guarantee you will get what I did, but mine were indistinguishable from factory new and were less than half price biggrin.gif Personally, I wouldn't bother with 3D unless you have already purchased a bunch of 3D BlueRays. Its kinda gimmicky and you will probably get bored with 3D in about an hour. 3D is cool as a demonstration, but not very useful as a mainstream technology, yet.

Why don't the TV's come with glasses. Obviously, marketing and sales departments got together and decided that

1. they could make more money selling the glasses as an accessory
2. they are not needed to use the TV for 99% of the available content
3. it keeps the price of the TV lower and lets the user decide if / when they choose to view 3D content
4. gives the consumer the option to choose what glasses they want to buy

wow ty yea amazon has em new for 60 each i want one at least for cod gaming and assains creed 3 3d sounds cool. but yea the film i am talking about is the one u can see on the glass that dosnt go all the way to the edge i wish I could take a pic but yea lol. Its visbale when up close u can see when the tv is off that it is on the screen just not all the way corner to corner, is that normal or do I remove that. also besides the plastic on the panel trim is there any other plastic to pull off on the black trim, it just feels wierd lol.

Please bear with me this is my first panasonic tv and fist plasma I have been a samsung man my whole life, but got tired of the led clouding and bleeding. I am also the only person in my whole family to buy a plasma as they are all scared of them lol. Thank u for all the help, I will say my brother is looking at getting a new tv and he is curious to go plasma but can't decide between the st or gt, I dont know what to tell em I went with the gt cause of a bestbuy deal they made me cause of a product issue. Anyone know what are the main advantages the gt has over the st.

Ty and sorry for the long read.

so i purchased my 65" gt. cool.gif
bb said it would take 3-5 to have it delivered.
said f that and told them i'll pick it up from their warehouse which is 30 mins away.
i'll be there 7 am sharp.

i do have 30 days to think about the protection plan.

anything i should know before unboxing?
120 hours of breaking in still required? run slides?

this is my first plasma.

thanks

Thanks for posting Black Ops settings...I think they're actually a lot better than CNet's, which I've been using for the past couple of months. I still do not have one issue with my 60GT50. I couldn't be happier after the nonstop LED/LCD exchanges since the beginning of the year. I have been playing all my games in Game Mode (including Assassin's Creed 3) without any noticeable issues. Is that PS3 or X360?

BIG box. Will need a truck or full size van. Do NOT transport flat. Highly recommend two people because of the size and weight. If you plan on using the base, attach it so that the TV is level. Also don't overtighten the screws; some people have camed out the screw heads. Slides only needed if paying for a pro-calibration. "Break In" by watching normal full screen content. Some letterbox content is fine but don't overdo it. Same goes for games with fixed white elements. Stretch 4:3 to full screen if viewing for extended times.

Start with the THX Cinema mode until you find your way around the menus then dial in either the C-Net or maybe the other set-up that has been mentioned a few times recently. I may give that a try myself..

^^^

Good advice. I'll echo the weight of the 65GT50, the box is massive too. I had it delivered, they had to un-box it on the main floor as the box was too big to maneuver down the stairs to the basement. Two big guys carried just the panel first down the stairs and they were struggling with it. Veins in their foreheads and all lol. It's def a two man job.
I had my P60GT50 calibrated last week....I thought the set look great with CNET settings but now...WOW.... didn't think i could get much better but with age and calibration..love this TV. Just throwing this out there if your sitting on the fence..might be worth it. The calibrator said that the CNET settings were closer (by only a bit) to the THX settings. My main viewing...Time Warner HD and xbox 360 gaming...4 blu-rays a month

Did I saw WOW yet!!

There is a better protection plan and you have 6 months to purchase it. Do some research. This appears to be the best warranty and I will get it in a couple of months. http://www.dtvexpress.com/

It depends on the Blu-ray you are playing and what aspect the film is displayed. Not all movies are going to be full screen, many have black bars top and bottom. Actually most do.

Found this explanation,
Quote:
Original HDTV programming is made in the 16x9 (1.78) as aspect ratio, which fits the dimensions of HDTVs. However, many theatrically films are made in either the 1.85 or 2.35 aspect ratio, which is even wider than the 16x9 (1.78) aspect ratios of HDTVs. Thus, when viewing these films on an HDTV (if presented in their original theatrical aspect ratio) - you will see black bars on your 16x9 screen. However, the bars will be less pronounced than if the same movie was letterboxed on a standard 4x3 set

DTV Express is a horrible warranty company - what the heck did you find in your research that would cause you to recommend them much less buy it for yourself ??

Yours is the first post I've seen anywhere saying anything negative about them.

Comparison of companies

http://*******************.com/hdtv/warranty-reviews.html

2 positive reviews

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/DTVExpress

Endorsement

http://news.yahoo.com/ceag-announces-editors-choice-awards-best-tv-warranty-092620613.html

If you have something negative to compare it to, I'd like to see it? I've seen lots of negative reviews on companies like Square Trade.

I was going to say I play AC3 on PS3 but if you say other X360 users don't see this then it must be the TV or a setting. I was watching the head to head vid for AC3 and it seems the PS3 has higher FPS in most instances. Either way, they said the devs have really pushed both the X360 & PS3 to it's limits of this gen with AC3. Have you noticed any issues with other games?
I recently received my 50GT50 & now have around 30hrs on it. So far, extremely impressed with the picture but I do have one thing thats been bugging me, its the noise/buzzing produced when the display produces a white/light or bright screen. I understand that this is normal for plasma technology but the noise my set is producing is louder then what I expected. One of the reasons I went with the Panasonic, is I've read many complain that the Samsung is typically louder.

So what I'm wondering is, what is considered "normal" for this set? Mine is in a small room ~ 13' X 11', I sit 10' or so away from the tv. With darker content the panel produces very little electrical noise (basically have to be right beside it, if you want to hear anything). Under brighter screens, with volumn muted, I can easily hear the tv from my watching position (if your ffwd'ing commercials, its easy to know which one are light/bright screens). At night when I listen at lower volumns through the tv, the noise is sometimes heard above the audio as well. If I'm listening at louder levels during the day, its not normally noticed. Is this considered normal for this set or did I happen to get a panel thats louder then the norm?

Also, had a question regarding contrast. I was playing with my Spears & Munsil calibration disk & looking at the contrast pattern, if I wanted to have it calibrated all the way up to peak white (254 level on this disk/pattern), I actually had to lower the stock contrast in the THX Cinema mode I have been using. For proper setting, I ended up with a contrast of 42. When looking online that seems extremely low compared to what most have it set to for night viewing but when I look at the demo material on the disk, have been watching Band of Brothers blue ray, or HD Satellite & the picture still looks great. Is this typical or are others only calibration to reference white (234 level on this disk)? I haven't had a bright sunny day yet & my room isn't that bright, but so far with daylight or the room lights turned on, the THX Daytime setting looks washed out/way too bright.

You should give members an opportunity to respond (there are a number of them within a couple hours of your original post). Please see your original thread for links concerning aspect ratios.
V for Vendetta has an aspect ratio of 2.4 : 1 This is a Wide Screen movie.

An HDTV with a 16:9 screen has an aspect ratio of 1.78 : 1

If you want the movie to fill the screen top-to-bottom without letterbox bars you will have to cut 25% of the image off the sides of the movie or distort the image by stretching it vertically.

Your equipment is working as it should be if the TV is displaying black letterbox bars above and below the movie.

While we're on the subject, i can't remember ever seeing a single post from someone who had a burned-in TV repaired or replaced under BB's Black Tie warranty.

Randy,

Are you suggesting that Best Buy doesn't stand behind their coverage of plasma display burn in?

Do you know oif anyone who has had a bad experience in this area?

I have a P65GT50 on order through Best Buy. (We have few purchasing options here in Alaska)

I was going to wait until I'd read this entire thread from the beginning before posting any questions or comments, but this subject inspired me to ask this question now. The main reason I opted for the expensive Best Buy Black Tie warranty is because the rep assured me the plan covers burn in. I was previously planning on buying a Square Trade warranty from Costco, which I've read in another AVS thread does not cover BI.

I'd send you a pm, but...

I cannot give you a URL to high def junkies but here is a quote of a posting there just last month (the post is dated October 8) and this gives you the topic of the thread:

Re: Best Buy Black Tie Warranty says it covers burn in, any ever return one?

I have dealt with it. My wife was using pandora on ours constantly and it burned the logo. They sent a tech out and tried ordering a new panel but couldn't. So they swapped it out for a new model. Very easy and well worth the money.
