Hi all! I was going to start a new thread but I figured it might be short lived after a few replies. About a month or so ago I posted that I put my Panasonic 55GT50 in for service due to the vertical banding on the screen which I will attach the photos from it. Panasonic authorized a panel replacement but it took a few weeks to get a new panel due to a parts shortage as they say. At any rate I am happy to say that Panasonic is certainly listening to their customers because I just got my GT50 back and after a few days of using it I cannot believe how much better this panel is. Firstly there are ZERO vertical lines on the screen. It's very clean and the uniformity is as perfect as anything I've seen. The best part of all is the LACK
OF IMAGE RETENTION. I'm not sure what Panasonic did to rectify this problem but they certainly did something right. I've tried everything (other than pausing an image for a long period) to get the panel to retain an image and it didn't. I watched the NFL Sunday Ticket on DirectTV this past Sunday and not one single logo appeared on the screen. Same for ESPN which was a channel I've always tried to avoid.
My biggest pain was the FOX logos. After 5 minutes they would easily show up on my old panel and it would take several sweeps of that Anti Image Retention software and mixed content most of the day to get rid of the FOX logo. I watched the SF 49ers game on FOX which lasted almost 4 hours due to OT and that FOX logo never ghosted on my new panel.
The Panasonic menus always IR'd on the old panel. Can't get it to happen on the new panel. DirectTV has menus that would easily cause IR on my old panel. No IR whatsoever from the DirectTV menus. Even when starting up the GT50, the SMARTVIERA logo would always cause IR on the old panel but again, NOTHING shows up on the new panel. Either I'm just lucky, which I doubt, or Panasonic obviously has listened to their customers complaints about IR then took some lessons from Samsung's plasma designed panels and fixed the problem. It's nice to finally enjoy my TV.
Just in case anyone was wondering, I have in fact used the built-in Anti Image Retention slides software as mentioned earlier and carefully checked for any IR on the gray screens. It just won't appear. IMO I would say it would be safe to buy a new Panasonic plasma now but if anyone has experienced the vertical banding as I have then I would recommend getting your panel replaced. I was considering selling my GT50 in favor of a Samsung since they have less IR issues but now that Panasonic is sending out new panels they've restored my faith.
