Hands done go with the 60' The VT50 is good, but not THAT much better to justify breaking your bank. With that said. I would still try my best to get the VT. But I had the same delimma as you, wound up getting the 60gt50, Calibrated by Kevin Miller of Tweakmytv fame. And I am LOVING my decision.

Same. Went with 55gt50 vs the vt50, used savings for chad b's geek buster calibration. Picture is excellent.

Oh how I wish that were true...In the poll on here, 30% claim that they can hear buzzing at viewing distance and OVER normal volume. So, 30% not only have buzzing, they have abnormal crazy buzzing. I am currently on my 2nd one, and it buzzes just as bad as the first one. Panasonic was unable to repair them. I will get it replaced/returned/refunded. How many came here just because of the buzzing? I have been on this forum years before getting this TV. I actually had another profile going back to 2004. I think, as pointed out, that buzzing on this model is in the minority since we are talking a very small portion of the people that own this TV post here and its out of proportion to say that 30% have buzzing because some joined AVS and came here just to report their issue and see if its normal and how to fix it. Its obviously not normal since the majority don't have an issue. That being said, it appears it is a normal issue with the Samsungs which is why many on here have gone with the Panasonic. It sounds like there is a bad lot of TVs and you were unlucky enough to get two from that batch. I'd delve deeper into it with Panasonic since buzzing is not what many experience and try and get to someone higher up to admit they have a batch of bad panels like Mitsubishi did about the bad Samsung LED panels back in 2008 where they doubled the warranty period.

I can certainly see your point that the sample here may be (or most certainly is) biased, but the bottom line is that an unacceptably large percentage of these TVs do have a buzzing issue, and I seriously doubt Panasonic was not aware of this. In my opinion, they made their decision, and now I'm making mine to keep returning them the TVs that buzz excessively. I get annoyed, they lose money, "everybody wins"...

Calling Panasonic and dealing with their CS after the technician failed to fix the buzz was one of the most useless experiences of my life.

Should I do the firmare update or leave it at the default?
I have heard IR seems worse after updating the firmare.

I am using the HD settings for customer that were posted by randy.

Is there is a good THX setting or is that best as is?

And I think uniformed people on other websites, who claim after firmware update their TV got worse LOL

I think I need to just read this site LOL

The only thing that is worrysome is the stand its on. It doesnt look very sturdy but im sure its fine.
Its just weird how a 50 LB Tv is held up by that small piece of plastic, and its not like it slides into anything, its in the back connected, which is odd.

Does anybody know how to navigate the service menu so I can check the hours. All I have been able to do is look trough the picture mode settings. Also if I mess up somehow is their a master reset or a key get the tv back to factory?

ok, here's another one from me for you gents....

so i prolly haven't thrown out an AV cable that came with a component in 20 years...just in case. i have 2 bins full of them. lo and behold, the first time i say "nah, i don't need another", it is a special farkin' connector for component connection to this TV!!! go figure.

anyway, i'm looking to hook up a wii my 6 year old just asked for(so happens i have one in the closet that was a gift many moons ago).

any thoughts? anyone willing to sell an unused one? the darn thing is like 40 bucks from panasonic, it'll kill me to buy one when i threw it out. grrrrr.

i'd go component to AVR, but i'm having handshake issues with the 790 where i can't use hdmi out on the AVR.

thanks for any thoughts guys.

FYI on the TV's Tos Link out. As previously noted, for whatever reason, if you have your input on one of the HDMI inputs, the TV's Optical Audio Out will only be in stereo, it doesn't pass through any multi channel format from the source. This includes for the TV's own apps. You have to have input set on something besides the HDMI inputs to get the 5.1 through the TV audio out Tos Link. I am using the Video input, the first below the last HDMI input, to get the 5.1 from the movies that have it on NetFlix Smart Viera app.


EDIT: Well, now all the inputs have 5.1 from the built in apps using the TV's TOS Link so something must have just been screwy that first time I tried it.

You are saying you tossed out the adapter that came with the TV ? eek.gif

You can also use a Wii-to-HDMI adapter. It's a little thing that looks like a USB thumb-drive. These things also upscale the 480p Wii video to 1080p for around $25.

thanks, yeah, i saw the yellow and red plugs and thought i don't need ANOTHER set of these, not knowing the TV is "quirky" with legacy connections. first time tossing, again, go figure.rolleyes.gif is that adapter on amazon? i think i saw one there.

Yes but I don't think the adapter that came with the TV is a special Panasonic only thing. I can look tomorrow evening to confirm but I think it's just a 4 or 5 pole mini plug to AV "break out" cable. This can't be more than $5 on Amazon or Radio Shack.

The "for what ever reason" is copy right protection. No recent HDTV will output surround sound from any external source.

If the display and AVR have ARC (Audio Return Channel) capability, then internal sourced material can produce surround sound that is transmitted to the AVR via HDMI.

Once again your information is completely wrong rolleyes.gif

The base is actually about 10 lbs of steel with a decorative plastic cover. The top of the stand is a heavy gauge steel angle bracket that inserts about 4 inches into the steel frame of the TV's body and is then held in place with 4 bolts. Nothing "odd" here at all.

Just got my 55GT50 today

so far so good with any issues like IR or buzzing

I tried watching some 3D content today and was disappointed
maybe it was the source since it was a variety of movies I had downloaded but the 3d ranged from ok to just bad in terms of serious ghosting

I tried playing with the 3d settings but nothing seemed to make much difference

this is coming through a HTPC hooked up to HDMI and using the Panasonic glasses

I made sure they were in the correct mode, my PC was in a 3d resolution at 1080p and I tried changing the 3d mode to 48hz

Avatar and Pixar's Brave looked the best although still showed ghosting but Spiderman and Prometheus looked really bad with severe ghosting all over the place

anyone have any tips for better 3d?

It's hard to say without knowing more about the content you are using (and if you downloaded torrents then we won't really be able to discuss that here) and that an HTPC is in play. Lots of variables there.

I have Avatar, Brave, and The Amazing Spider-man in 3D. Mine are 3D Blu-ray though and I do not have the issues you described.

I've seen the adapter cable on EBay a few times for like $10.

You said it yourself, it's the content downloaded. Try a real 3D bluray movie not a torrent.
