Agent Travian C. says: TV - RESET
While TV is on, press and hold down "Vol -" on the Television itself, and MENU on the remote for 5 seconds, the Self Check screen should appear. At this point press and hold the power button on the TV until the TV powers down

Any idea of what this actually is though?

Every night when I go to bed I turn on dnice slides, upon waking up at 7am in the morning I can still see the ESPN logo in the lower right hand corner. I still leave the slides running and by the time I get home from work a 5pm the logo is gone. Next day I watch the tv the same way, run the slides the same way, get the same IR thats still there in the morning, then is gone when I get home from work. Does this sound concerning to anyone, still have 9 days in my return window. Surely I shouldn't have to run the slides everyday for 17 hours to remove IR. I have around 250 hours on the set, should I continue to age the screen this way until the set has 500 hours?

Theoretically, wouldn't it take 3 times longer for slides to get rid of IR than normal viewing? Or maybe not 3x, but definitely longer. When you watch other things is the IR obvious, or is it just because you run slides that you can see it? I get slight IR from espn and such, but even looking for it, I can't see it during normal viewing. Of course slides make it obvious though. Honestly I'm about through with slides. They aren't improving the experience, like a guy above said, it's like babysitting a TV. That's not why I have it.

Ah, and reading down, I see you don't notice it during normal viewing. I think this affects all the GT50s, and probably all the VT50s. I think when people say "after 250 hours I never have to worry about IR anymore" I think that really just means they don't run slides anymore. As long as you can't see it normally, I wouldn't worry about it.

The slides were never meant to be used to get rid of ir. That's just something someone mentioned one time and everybody started doing it.

The room I want to put my new TV in has windows opposite that I am willing to black out, but am wondering if the screen is very reflective of overhead lights as well. Does the bright room setting remedy this at all?

I have a picture window that's perpendicular to my 50GT. Sure, on a bright sunny day things are a little washed out, but not a big deal IMHO and I'm pretty picky. I do have 35% window tint/film I put on the window to protect furniture and our new wood floors (from light "staining") so that helps.

Which makes me think of something. For anyone worried about window glare try using window films. You can get them in all sorts of degrees of shading. Better than the all-or-nothing of curtains. Their a diy project and can be bought online. Also, Ikea makes shade panels that don't much block the light but limit it. They're the kind on a track. We have a 4-track with 4 panels. When we closed them during the brightest time of day they still let light through but stop any glare.

Just something for folks to think about before they say "I'm not going to get a plasma because of the light".

So I have been looking at this TV on my wall at work. It's got a tremendous picture. Coincidentally it's an old Viera Plasma. who would have known. I never really bothered to pay attn. It's a Panasonic TH-42PD50U. just a random tid bit for the day.

so the GT50 doesnt have a blue filter or blue mode? major bummer on that

Regarding Slides.....

On my GT I ran the Evangelo slides which are multiple variations of white/gray, red, green, blue. About 20 slides. I just noticed the Dnice slides are 13 slides with less variation in an odd order. what's the difference? is one better than the other? If so why? Thanks

Neither one is better than the other. DNice used to have more slides but removed them because they were unnecessary.

Nope. It's not that helpful anyway.

No, IR does affect all the GT and VT sets. Mine and most others do not show any IR. I have never plagued my display with those silly color slides and I never will. If you bought a new car would you put it up on blocks and rev the engine for a weeks before you drove it ?
I think a lot just depends on uses as to whether you get or notice IR. If you're not watching a lot of channels with logos or playing a lot of video games you're unlikely to see IR. If you don't watch a lot of stuff with a lot of bright, white scenes (hockey with the ice, basketball with the court, things with snow scenes etc. etc.) or check white slides you're fairly unlikely to notice most IR even if you have it.

I've tried plasmas twice and had IR issues (temp but still annoying) both times. But I play a lot of game and watch hours of ESPN etc. and I'm anal about looking for it so I drive myself nuts and have returned the plasma's both times (though buzz--which I'm also sensitive to and anal about--was the main culprit both times).

Since I am new to the flat-panel scene I will ask this question even though it sounds kind of silly, but I don't know the answer. How do I get into the 3-D mode to set up the custom settings? Do I need to load a 3-D movie? Thanks

Just push the 3D button on the remote to enter 2D-3D mode.

ok so i got my gt up today on the wall. issue is i cant center it right now because the outlet plate is in the way. If i remove the plate i have enough room to slide it an inch. Is this ill advised to have an uncovered outlet behind the TV? should i just buy a new mount after reviewing every aspect of its dimensions?

That brings up a second question. This mount was mounted high up so had 4 lag bolts screwed in. Had to lower it for fitting the GT so i dropped the wall plate lower and a new set of holes drilled into the same studs. Now if i get another mount are the studs compromised at all due to each having 4 holes already bored out? the new mount would probably fit over the plates and the new holes would be in between the first mount point and second mount point.

Ill-advised to leave the outlet plate off? Well it certainly won't be safe. If someone else reaches behind the TV to unplug it for some reason and touches the sides of the outlet, they'll feel some tingle. Can you move the outlet up or down from it's current position and gain your inch?

You should be fine with new holes bored. The other holes won't affect the integrity of the 2X4 or 2x6 if that is what you are boring into. As long as there is some adequate space in between the old holes and the new holes. I would think 2 or 3 inches would be adequate.

Thats what I figured. Not that anyone is allowed to go behind there besides me, but I can see the issue. Moving it is not a bad idea, but that means more time calling an electrician, patching the wall etc...

This is probably the easier route by just buying a different mount that can safely fit over the outlet and media box (they would be between the wall mount top and bottom) and I can probably re use the holes depending on the spacing on the new mount.

Perhaps I should have just let this post go as clearly you seemingly know more about the man than I do. That said, I do recall a few years ago there was some controversy with him re HD DVD and BD. However, I would state that if he were as you describe, I would very much doubt that luminaries like Kevin Miller, David MacKenzie and Dewayne Davis would want to be associated with the Flat Panel Shootout. To call him "very dishonest", "like a shady used car salesman" is on the surface potentially libellous, unless of course the facts support your contention. I am not talking about his bannings, a couple of which I know of.

Program that into it. It is one of the options in the pull down menu.

Agreed. That's what I have done.

I am in the final stages of making a decision on upgrading my old panasonic plasma monitor.

I am down to the following two options:

65GT50 from Paul's TV for $2199 (no tax, free delivery)

OR

LC-70LE847U 70" AQUOS Quattron LED Smart TV (comes with 2 3D glasses and Sharp 3D blu ray player..about $250 value) for $2399 (no tax, free delivery)

I do realize that this is a GT50 forum but I was hoping for some objective opinions. My room has a few windows and can get kinda bright, but I typically have the shades drawn and it isn't an issue with my old panasonic plasma monitor. The 70" would be nice and my wife likes brighter TVs but I just don't think the LED will compare when it comes to picture quality...but then again, I figure both will look outstanding after the old monitor. While my seating for the TV is generally straight on, I am concerned about off angle viewing with LED as well as motion blur.

I would welcome any opinions. Please help this confused consumer.eek.gif

6:45 PM - Received a call from the warehouse who advised me my 55GT50 was back in stock and ready to ship. What day is good for me? Seriously? If this wasn't so pathetic it would be funny. When I told her that I had spoken to 3 other people today that was NOT the case, I was put on hold and when she came back I was told I was correct. The TV was not in stock and they would be getting no more. She said she doesn't know why she was told they were in and she would "forward this to a supervisor".
10:30 PM I called and spoke to a service rep who stated that the exchange for the GT50 for the VT50 was in the system and awaiting final processing. The first I had heard of it. He said a supervisor was "unavailable" and he PROMISED to call me by 6:00 PM EST tomorrow.
Fun.
Update: I got the call and they said I have got a VT50 replacement coming on Thursday. That makes me happy. Except I have been checking out the VT50 threads and it seems dialing in the calibration settings on the VT50 is a lot more complicated than on the GT50. It's kind of intimidating. They seem kind of intense over there eek.gif LOL

Awesome deal you got there. I upraded from a 42" Panny G10 to a 55" VT It is awesome. If you are planning on calibrating yourself I could see the setting being intimidating but I just took someones settings from an amazon review for now. I'm going to get my TV calibrated by Chad B hopefully soon.

In my opinion there isn't much of a way we can calibrate our sets as well as a professional calibrator can. I thought I was able to set up a new set fairly well until I watched Chad B calibrate my new set. It takes lots of good equipment and knowledge to accomplish setting up a properly calibrated set.

Thats the good news but I have a few questions and minor complaints I guess about some of its other features. While I consider the PQ to be by far the most important to me, getting less functionality than what I am used to from a usb/streaming standpoint has me a bit put off.

USB File playback is not as good as my cheap samsung und6400 bedroom tv. I find the panasonic nativeley doesnt recognize many formats via the usb inputs. I have never had an issue with any files on my Samsung so this was very disappointing. AVI for sure it does not do (intended or huge oversite?)and I have also had a wierd issue with an mp4 file where it displayed once to be played and then not again? and no idea why.

This pretty much elimates my use of usb functionality since its so unreliable and I am not going to spend the many hours to convert existing files.

Now on to DLNA

I was streaming via PS3 media played but again I found alot of the files not supported and wouldnt play(works fine on the samsung and my ps3). So I decided to try serviio which I like very much. I finally found a profile that would work with Panasonic viera and assist with the playing of the unsupported formats listed above. The movie art is an added bonus I find really cool.

However I have some questions about the wireless capabilities of the gt50 that I cannot find. I am starting to overhaul my internal network and planning to buy wireless n dual band router (or maybe even an ac).

Will the Viera connect to the 5ghz channel? I assume it has to be the wireless n but I cannot verify in any searching I have done. Also is anyone using any other products to boost this things connect capabilites. Eventually my aim to stream whatever I want and I dont want this connection to become a bottleneck.

Thanks for all the great info in this thread and I think I made the right choice, this tv will be perfect once i get over some of these minor hurdles.

Ouch! Now I may think of cancelling my order. I have an LG LM8600 and is perfect in all formats. What about installing Plex on your pc does the GT50 stream video well? Any hickups/complaints?

If you are using either THX Cinema, THX Bright Room, or Custom...there are no Tint control adjustments needed. Leave it at its default setting.

A little OT, but since it seems a few of you are purchasing one of these TV's if anyone is looking for the panny 3D glasses, Amazon just dropped the price of the TY-ER3D4MU to $48.43 with free shipping.

Still waiting on my 60GT50 to be delivered. Seems Paul's TV shipping is not the fastest..
Been "In Transit" for 6 days from Massachusetts to Philadelphia. Estimated delivery is Feb. 4th.

Is that the lowest they've been anywhere since the Sears $30 sale?

As far as I know it is. Been checking prices on these for the past couple of weeks.
I did luck out and get BestBuy to pricematch the Sears $30 deal a few days ago. That deal would be dead though as Sears now lists the glasses at retail price. Price went back up the day I got back from BB.
