Official Panasonic GT50 Series Discussion Thread [No Street Price Talk] - Page 212

Recently purchased a 60GT50 and am awaiting it's arrival. Could someone educate me as to what the manufacturer's 1 year limited warranty covers? Do you have to pay for shipping if for some reason the unit is defective within that year? I'm always at a struggle with decisions to purchase warranties through retailers as they charge a hefty price. Is it generally recommended to purchase the warranty for a set in this price range with plasma sets since they are reported to have issues from time to time?

Its in home service for 1 year, parts and labor.

So I managed to get some IR last night from the entire menu interface... rolleyes.gif

I honestly didn't think I changed the settings that much, but I was getting slightly neurotic about them. I could only see it on red/dark gray slides though. Before you ask, I only checked out of curiosity, and because I was going to run the slides overnight to continue aging the panel. I couldn't see anything while watching TV, but I could make out the entire menu on those two slides. At any rate it completely vanished overnight, so a big sigh of relief compared to some of the horror stories I have read.

"Age" the panel with normal content. Not slides...

"Overnight" is the key word here, I am aging the panel by watching normal content during the day. I just want to get the first 100 hours out of the way, to make it slightly less prone to IR or to see if I notice any changes in settings after the supposed "break-in" period.

I appreciate your concern though, I'm enjoying the TV just fine. biggrin.gif

Boy, I was into following this thread but I have to bow out now due to the constant questions about IR and buzzing. Some people need to learn how to use the "SEARCH" function. I will probably follow the 60 series thread now. Many thanks to all of you that posted relevant info here.

Sorry for the rant and if I offended anyone.

ESPN is by far the worst offender with leaving that damn logo in the bottom right

it is permanently on the screen of my old plasma that I just donated to my parents (fortunately they'll never notice as they're in their late 60's)

it also stays on my set for days after watching the channel for a couple of hours for a basketball game or something
it definitely fades with time but it's there

From time to time Squaretrade has 30-40% discounts on their warranties. You can get a 4 year one (actually 3 years on top of panny one) for under $200. That is for in home service. I think it may even be cheaper if you buy it through Costco.

I've had a GT50 since roughly June and have enjoyed it. I just picked up a pair of Sony Bluetooth headphones, the Sony MDR1RBT. They are very nice.

However, while the GT50 recognizes them and they do work, I have to go into the menus and "Connect" them every single time I want to use them. This is very annoying as it's pretty deep into the menus and requires perhaps 12 buttons to get there. Normally, such as my iPhone to my car, Bluetooth devices simply reconnect. Frustratingly, even this MDR1RBT reconnected magically one time. The TV displayed a message on screen that it had connected and it just worked. That was the first and only time that ever happened. It does always display a message when I turn the power to the headphones off saying they disconnected.

So I have some faint indication that it *can* reconnect, doing so is generally considered "standard behavior" for Bluetooth devices, the TV clearly knows about the headphones, they are modern headphones from a generally reputable manufacturer, I have the latest GT50 firmware..... I'm perplexed. On top of it all, I even saw it work one time (out of perhaps 30 that I have tried it now).

Any tips or tricks people have for getting Bluetooth to reconnect automatically to the set or has anyone else encountered this issue?

Starting to wonder if I have some actual burn in. Still seeing some slightly dark shapes from playing several hours of Call of Duty Black Ops II three days ago in the bottome left and right corners. I have watched about 10 hours of TV since and still visible. I am only noticing them now because I am checking my email on it. But its so light I can't see it while watching video. I guess tomorrow I will play with it on "Just". Don't get to see the radar but rather that than make this more noticeable. It probably will go away in a few more days. I just haven't seen any IR last this long yet.

It's IR if it's going away no matter how long it takes. With gaming at the "several hour" rate, and using your display for email, you are probably having more fixed images on your display that the usual TV/Blu-ray/DVD owner who mixes his viewing material extensively.

I seriously wouldn't worry about it. I play black ops two constantly on my TV. Often 3 to 4 hours a time. I can assure you even if it's there for days it will eventually go away

An hour of running the anti IR wipe, still there though fainter. And I don't have issues with email or surfing, most of the screen is white with print moving all over it. Never seen anything after surfing or checking email.

It will go away. Chances are your trying to look directly for it use it and randomly see it. Even if that isn't the case. I'm willing to bet everything it will go away in time.

Hey everyone , new to forum. Just picked up my GT50 yesterday and wow am i impressed.

Quick question, i tried the CNET guys' calibration. In my opinion, its wayyy to dark. Anyone else feel that way? Are there any other calibration settings someone could provide?

And also, this 'break in' period of 100 hrs. Do i just watch regular tv? I streamed netflix last nite, should i not be doing that during this 'break in ' period?

Thanks!!!

Just use the TV however you intended on using it. Watching Netflix is completely okay.

One good movie to "age the panel" is avatar. It's a full-screen movie. It's long. Full of vibrant colors and dark scenes. And is a pretty good movie. Also the perfect movie to see how much your TV can really shine.

I received my 65GT50 yesterday morning. I have to say that just about all my worries with this TV were for not. I have a bright room with windows behind the TV, and my family plays games a lot.

I decided that I was just going to set the TV up and use it. No break in, no babying. If the TV can't stand up to how it will be used, then I'm returing it, as the technology isn't for me. My kids played Mario U for about 4 hours yesterday. They paused the game and left multiple times (although the Wii does dim the screen after a while). I thought for sure that the bright time and score in the upper right corner would be a problem. I had zero noticable IR yesterday, and I looked for it.

The TV was more than capable of displaying an excellent picture in the brightness of my room. The colors and motion handling are excellent on this screen. I've never seen what I displayed look so good before, from all sources. I am able to see faint flicker sometimes when I'm looking away from the TV, but it isn't a concern or problem for me.

My only problem with the set, which will be an unfortunate deal breaker for me if it can't be fixed, is the buzzing. I sit about 12-13 feet away from the screen. I can hear it change as the screen brightness changes. I think it is the panel, because it is uniform from top to bottom on both sides of the back of the TV. It's hard for me to watch anything because it is distracting. My wife can't hear it unless she puts her ears close to the back of the TV. I have much better hearing than she does, though.

So, I'm going to play the exchange game, hoping for a set with no IR, just as excellent of a picture (this isn't really a concern), and one that is more quiet. I don't care if I can hear some faint buzzing from a couple feet away, but 13 feet away is a bit much. I really hope this works out, because this TV is superb otherwise.

Wow, i heard zero buzzing from mine. I see this posted from others, i couldnt hear a thing....odd.

Now this is bizaare. I am sitting here reading my web browser on my computer on HDMI 4 and all of the sudden the picture gets visibly dimmer. I go and look and the picture setting has gone from Custom, where it was set, to Standard! WTF!

The only way I see IR usually is by running the wipe program under setup.

I have a 55GT50 with about 1000 hours on it. Every now and then my screen goes totally green when switching channels on cable box. The only fix I could do was to turn off tv, cable box, and pioneer elite and then turn it all on again. Has anyone else experienced this?

Sounds like the box to me. What box is it? I don't have that on my older Dish receivers.

Hi there,

just got my 50gt50.

I have pc hooked to it, and even after correcting over scan, there is a tiny band all the way around the screen. Is this normal?

It was there in the viera netflix app too.

Thanks

Sounds like there might be a handshake issue with your cable box. Who is your cable provider and what type of box do you have?

Edit: Siri didn't relay my message properly the first time. smile.gif

This could be an HDMI handshake issue. Cable boxes can and will update firmwares without you knowing about it. So you're running the cable box to the receiver then to the TV? Check out the Pioneer forums for your receiver and read up a bit on HDMI handshake issues (if that is indeed the cause). There are ways to reset it, specific to your receiver. You'll just have to troubleshoot it piece by piece.

Yes. There is a 1/4" black mask around the perimeter of the screen to hide the absolute edge of the panel. In HD Size 2 mode with Aspect set to FULL, you will get the full image right up to the edge of that mask. Most Panasonics with narrower bezels have this mask, including the Pro models.
