I see what I see and you hear what you hear. You should enjoy the set, you are paying for it after all. Buzzing is bad in itself but to me VT50 uniformity at the local store was a revelation, I thought plasma does not have DSE or bands. I saw both on the same set. Compare $700 plasma to $2500 and $700 unit's uniformity is about perfect while $2500 has all the issues. I am thinking it must be the applied filters that are causing these effects that I see how else can I explain it? I am quickly learning the simpler the better... You post is very encouraging. Thanks again.

I should have mentioned that my current unit is a November 2012 build.

I used this picture just now. To the best of my knowledge it didn't trigger the ABL, even at 100 contrast. Going from 75-80 on Custom is easily noticeable, where as nothing from 80-100 could be spotted at all. Maybe you can use the same picture and test it? I'm not really sure what I'm trying to get at here, unless it's just my TV, the contrast definitely seems to be capped.

The original can be found here.

What is this ABL you guys are talking about?

Does anyone know if the 60 inch version of this tv is "VESA Compatible?" If so. Does anyone recommend a good wall mount? This will be my 1st time mounting a tv. I'd rather have it on the wall vs the floating mount I have it on now.

Check out Monoprice for "6663". Worked fine on my 60GT. Was under $40 shipped. It only tilts (no swing). Also check out their HDMI cables. Inexpensive and work great.

Automatic Brightness Limiter

I double checked my results on the contrast cap again. I'm about 99% sure these are all accurate. It definitely explains a few things regarding the dimmer THX Cinema/Cinema settings. I honestly don't think the set can really get much brighter than these caps though, at least not without triggering the ABL much easier. Try it out on Cinema mode for yourself if you don't believe me.

Contrast Caps

Standard - 100
Cinema - 56
THX Cinema - 68
THX Bright Room - 80
Game - 80
Custom - 80
Vivid - 82

It can get much brighter than that. What is your "Power save" option set to in the "ECO/energy saving" menu? In Custom, the fL measurement between a Contrast setting of 78 and 100 is nearly double.

I normally use Custom or THX Bright Room and noticed the contrast caps out at around +81, so i just checked all my picture modes (by eye) and they all cap out (stop increasing) at one point higher than your list so i'd say your findings are probably accurate.

I will measure each mode at 50, 80, and 100 tonight.

The "VESA" bolt pattern dimensions are shown in the Quick Start Guide linked in post #2 of this thread. It shows you exactly where the wall mounting holes are located on the back of the TVs - just be sure you're looking at the diagram for your particular screen size.

Thank you. I'm getting a mount today and will attempt to wall mount this beautiful tv today. I've always been pretty skeptical of mounting a tv to the wall. But it seems not only would it look better on the wall but it would also add a little more room to my set up. I'm also concerned on how high I should set it up. To many choices frown.gif

IMO
Mount it so when seated your eyes are level with the center to lower 3rd of the screen. This is my personal preference.
It's not comfortable to watch displays mounted any lower or much higher.
This should also give you optimal choice's for mounting your center channel speaker, if you have one, above or below the display.
post #6795 of 9028
I mounted mine on the wall with the bottom edge of the 65" display at eye level. I'm 13" back from the TV. I've always had the middle of the display at eye level and have finally "seen the light" in mounting it higher. Not above a fireplace higher, but higher then what a ~26" stand will give you. It's more comfortable to lean back and watch then lean back and have to tweak your head/neck downward to view. Of course this is purely personal preference!
post #6796 of 9028
Sorry that is 13' back from the TV :-P

Well, got my new 65 today, December build. Buzzing is the same or slightly worse than the set I returned. Not sure if I'll try to live with it or chance another return.

It's on "standard", I assume "saving" would be the energy saving option or no?

Edit: It was still the same on both settings.

I know that my settings didn't go another point higher, but it's possible it could vary among sets. Thanks for confirming.

It's probably like the speedometer on a '76 Chevette. Top of the scale is much higher than the cars maximum speed !

Just wondering what % of the gt50's were/are buzzers and what the main cause is, mine is due next week, is it better to return it if it's a buzzer and keep trying, or would it be an easy fix? Still a little worried......redface.gif

I don't think anyone can answer that, I think the fix was some special screws that minimized the buzzing.

Mounted the tv 36 inches from the floor. When sitting On the furniture my head or Eye level is about 5 to 6 inches from the very bottom of the set. I Definitely don't understand why I never mounted this to the wall or any of my TVs to the wall to begin with. It's very easy and a hell of a lot cheaper than any other TV stand.

Good to hear, A TV on the wall looks way better and gives more space in my opinion. More of a modern look. Enjoy.

I did give me a lot more room to work with. Now I have more places to place all the electronics by the tv. Now I just need a decent Entertainment center
post #6807 of 9028
Is there a certain way to get ARC to work on this set? I can't seem to figure it out.
post #6808 of 9028
Alright, I just completed my measurements. These are peak light output measurements taken with an i1D3 in a pitch black room with a 100 IRE 10% APL window pattern (The best pattern to avoid triggering APL). I took measurements of each picture mode with Contrast settings of 50, 80, and 100. Each picture mode used their default general settings, with the exception of both the Color mgmt. and C.A.T.S. settings being turned off for each mode.

  • Custom

50 = 15.5 fL
80 = 35.15 fL
100 = 51.80 fL

  • Vivid

50 = 19.23 fL
80 = 40.66 fL
100 = 66.54 fL

  • Standard

50 = 4.46 fL
80 = 8.37 fL
100 = 13.46 fL

  • Cinema

50 = 17.82 fL
80 = 26.28 fL
100 = 26.35 fL

  • THX Cinema

50 = 17.93 fL
80 = 33.95 fL
100 = 34.11 fL

  • THX Bright Room

50 = 17.65 fL
80 = 35.10 fL
100 = 48.78 fL

  • Game

50 = 14.64 fL
80 = 32.54 fL
100 = 47.49 fL

Nice results. Look @ that standard mode!
post #6810 of 9028
Thanks for those results HD-Master.

I just don't get it though, they aren't at all in line with what I personally experienced. Your results from Custom mode indicate that 100 contrast is 48% brighter than at 80 contrast. I do not possess any testing equipment, but I used material that I know for a fact did not enable the ABL at all. Not only was 75-80 more noticeable than 80-100, but 79-80 was also more noticeable. If fl output increases by 48% than how could it be possible for me not to notice anything at all from 80-100 when I can see 79-80 as clear as day? Is it possible the results using a 10% pattern could vary that greatly with full-screen pictures? But even in that case, all that would mean is that your method is inaccurate to gauge "practical" levels of contrast when viewing normal content. I'm not saying your testing is inaccurate, I'm just highly confused.

If you don't mind, just test by your eye and use a full screen photo in the media player. I just measured the contrast cap at 77 for the default custom mode for photos. Go from 72-77 and you can easily see the brightness increase. Then go 1 interval at a time, starting at 72 and making sure you can see the increase from just a single press. After that go from 77-100 and tell me if you honestly saw any increase. Any photo that's not bright enough to trigger the ABL will work fine.
