A lot of people watch HD material on 60" screens from 8'. That's probably in the sweet spot for seeing the detail present in high quality HD source material.
Eight feet might not be ideal for SD DVDs. We still watch movies that are not yet available on Blu-ray. We almost never watch SD TV. I'm sure that would be pretty bad. Also, we are two to three feet further back.
You can take a tape measure to test for yourself, or you can buy from a dealer with a trouble free return policy. I think testing for yourself is the best plan.
Dithering shouldn't be a problem.
