The GT50 can produce a very sharp image; I dont think the "softness" people describe has anything to do with the panel. I think it is primarily related to the video processor in these units. 1080p looks excellent, 1080i looks very good - to - excellent, 480i looks as good as 480i ever looked
The soft-spot is with 720p; it's more than watchable and depending on your viewing distance it may look great, but if you get close you will see the shortcomings of the 720p scaling process.
The best way out is to try to pair up the GT50 with components that can output 1080p directly and bypass the internal scaler.
Beyond that, unless you plan on setting the TV side by side with something else you may never notice any deficiencies. In fact depending on what you are upgrading from you may just be blown away by the PQ. I am quite happy with my set. I was happy enough with the 60GT50 that I added a 50ST50 when I ran into a clearance unit for cheap. I did have the 50st50 side by side with a Samsung LCD (4 years old) for a few weeks. The ST50 produced better PQ in every way including sharpness.
