Megapooty: I remember having something similar when I had faulty wires connected. I hope it's not the connector itself on the panel. Are you using HDMI or components?

Just wondering if the ES6100 has any sort of channel guide?

All I can figure out is to press "info" on the remote which brings up information only about the current channel that I'm on. If I press to the right, I can see what is coming up but again, only the channel I'm on.

Is there a complete channel guide that I'm overlooking?

Thanks.

Hi Guys,

I have read as many posts as I can about this and tried every calibration setting imaginable for my UN60ES6100, while my problem is similar to others, mine is a bit more specific. I'm asking about the "dimming" – most notably while gaming on Xbox 360 as well as watching movies with dark scenes.

My problem is that, for example, while playing Halo 4 or Borderlands 2, when I move into a dark area, shadow or just a dark room, the whole screen gets dark, and not just the scene but other elements that normally would not dim in-game like the HUD display, Heath bar, cross-hairs, menu etc...

Everything is fine when I move out of the dark area, brightness and colors are vivid and damn near perfect, but as soon as I get to a dark area i get what would be close to the "Black Crush", the difference is, EVERYTHING gets dark. Menus, maps etc..

I have tried all the usual suspects: Eco Sensor OFF, Motion Off, Game Mode on/off and so on, it even happens when in MOVIE mode. The only thing that works is when I turn HDMI Black off, but then the colors get washed and everything is grey.

I have read about going into the service menu to turn off dimming but I just got this for Christmas and don't want to void the warranty. Is there any solution to this specific problem? Thanks.

What is your backlight turned to? When I game I have backlight setting to 15 and I really can't tell when it does start to dim. I also have it set to standard as well.
I have backlight turned to 18. I also usually have it set to standard as well. I have it set to a Xbox configuration mentioned earlier in this thread. Everything does look great, but it's just when I move into a dark area,..like a corner, or under the stairs and the whole screen goes really dim. The specific kicker that's different from others that I read is that the static elements of the game (on screen) gets dark as well, like the cross-hairs and health bar and other on-screen menu items that should always remain the same brightness...it all goes dim which I know shouldn't happen, cause when I play on other TV's it works just fine.

Well maybe I have just learned to have my eyes adjust to it because it is crazy how with 18 backlight it still looks really dark during dark scenes. What is the brightness set to? My is 45. Also not to get off topic but do you notice faint horizontal ghost lines when playing games and the camera pans up and down or even side to side. Say you are moving camera around with controller do you notice them? I may just be nitpicky but I do notice them.
No, this is a pretty significant darkness, like zero visibilty. I might have to take some pics tonight and upload them for clarification. My brightness is set at 45 also. As to the other effect you mentioned, no, I do not recognize and horizontal ghost lines. The worst that I have seen is a quick lag in image resolution, like a face would blurry or pixelated for a second before rendering in-focus after the camera pans.

The auto dimming has bothered me a lot as well. I haven't seen much success with turning it off in the service menu. I found this thread here a couple of weeks ago that helped alleviate the problem. I've changed my settings as well and it has lessened the dimming.

On a side note, had geek squad calibrate my tv. It's free if you are a silver premier member. The results are way different than any of the setting posted on this forum and other websites. I'll post my settings when I get a chance.

IMO - I didn't like how it looked at first, but I'm slowly adjusting to it. You are not going to get vibrancy, and the whites will appear greenish. But the colors are accurate and rich. On my set, the tech did not have to adjust the 10pt white.

@Hectorcaliente Thank you for clarifying that! I thought that was the case but 2 Samsung support reps couldn't figure it out.

samsungpwr - I had a similar issue with the reps from samsung. Their knowledge is limited to the open source info you and I can get indipendantly.

On a side note...what does everyone think about the motion on the samsung un60es6100? It still bugs me a little. Has me wondering at times I wonder
if 120hz / 240 CMR is fast enough for a panel that is 60 inch or larger.
I'm struggling to decide between the Vizio E601i-A3 and the Samsung un60es6100. The Samsung is about twice as much, but the much publicized lip sync issue with the Vizio could be a deal breaker for me. I understand they "may" "eventually" get the problem resolved in a firmware update, but it sounds like the last update did not quite squash the bug. Also, I suspect (but have no proof) that the Samsung has better picture quality than the Vizio. Whatever tv I buy, I would like it to last 5+ years, until the OLED/4K tvs come down to a reasonable price. Do I try and save $800 now, only to regret it later? The Samsung is $1699, and that is still a really great price for a 60" HDTV. I currently have a Samsung 46" HDTV that I paid $3,000+ for! This is going to be a tough decision. I still have about 3 weeks to decide (waiting for my tax refund), so I will monitor this thread. Anyone out there have any opinions about the comparison between these two tvs?
Deck70 - yeah, I'd go with the Samsung vs vizio. I'm on the same boat, wait to see what OLED does in 5 years. The reason I bought mine without remorse was due to the size and price. I payed 1400 on Black Friday special, so at the end of the day, I cannot complain about this tv, especially when compared to other TVs in that price range.

I didn't go with plasma due to weight difference and that being in the military, I have to move around often. Once in settled and retired, I'll drop 4 G's on a tv (as I would plan to keep for a long time).
Does anyone know if this TV has IR shortcuts for changing Game mode or Picture mode for a Harmony remote? I use a receiver, so all of my devices come in one HDMI input, so I find myself constantly turning Game mode or PC mode on and off. It'd be nice if I could shortcut it on the Harmony

I'm deciding between the 60"samsung 6100 and the sharp 640u. They are about $600 apart and seem similarly equipped. Am I missing something?
The samsung picture looks a little better in the best buys I've been to, but not $600 better.

Any experience with one vs the other would be welcome. thanks.
The Sharp 640U has better motion, but it's picture and color accuracy not as good. I looked at both before I bought the Samsung. If I could do it again, I'd stick with the Samsung knowing what I know now. Motion on the Samsung bugs me a little, but not enough to hate this tv. I'm actually very content with the price I payed. I may however go plasma or oled 5 years down the road.

Does anyone have the width and depth of the stand of the UN40ES6100? I'm thinking of buying it but i need the stand to fit on a very small table that is about 20" wide and about 15" deep. Is the "spider" stand wider than 20"?

If someone doesn't beat me to it, I will measure it tonight and post the size.

Depth with Stand (inches) 9-5/8
Depth without Stand (inches) 2-1/4
Stand Width (inches) 21-3/4

Awesome! Didn't know Crutchfield had stand dimensions on their website. Thanks!

I just picked up a UN46ES6100FXZC a few days ago and experiencing a serious problem. At any random moment, the screen will go black for a second and the picture will come back. Once it comes back, the Source ID in the top left corner will appear as if you had just selected a new source (eg. HDMI 1). This happens quite frequently (especially today) and at least a few times a day on average.

I am currently running a Rogers 8642HD PVR on HDMI-1. I have all the ECO stuff turned off. TV is plugged into a powerbar. I tested the Rogers box on another TV and no problems there. I tested the TV on another Rogers box and the same thing happened.

I am not happy as I have already had to return 3 TV's because of heavy clouding and spotlighting. If it's not clouding or spotlighting, its random screen cut outs with these cheap new LED slim panels. Is this a defective unit or is something else causing this to happen?

Did a software upgrade this AM on UN40ES6100, set had been on 001025, found 001027, I let it install. Checked the Samsung site, there's a 001026 listed as available 1/28/13, no mention of a 001027. I checked some of the RVU issues that I've seen in the past and issues I've seen with frame rate, stuttering video, dropped audio haven't shown up yet.

i got to say this is very strange for me...because i calibrated my set in movie mode for all inputs.....you know PS3,Xbox,the video and picture usb player of the tv....the old dvd player my HD TV Cable...everything and for me this mode turns off the autodimming....ive seen the batman movies in bluray quality which we all know are 85% dark scenes.....games like dead space etc...the walking dead tv show..and i cant see auto dimming anymore.....even in all black screens with just some white letters like in the L&O Special victims unit screens the letters are well iluminated...and im sure the auto dimming is off...because when i changed to standard mode for example i can see the auto dimming back on again.....movie mode it supposedly to turn auto dimming mode off......maybe you need to make a firmware upgrade......btw never use game mode.......game mode sucks... ....i know that probably the set have some lag, specially in FPS games......but even when i played gears of war.....i really couldnt notice any lag in movie mode..and i compared with my pc 2ms response time screen...i didn notice any significant difference.........of course my playing skills are very low....hehe maybe i move to slow to notice any lag. but like i said ....its better to play with nice picture....even with lag.....if there is any.......than in game mode.

Does anyone know whats the difference between the 6100 and the 6300?
Just picked up an UN40ES6100 for our bedroom. It's replacing a 15 year old 27" Sony Trinitron so we are very satisfied with it. Only issue I have is that I need a longer power cable. I did a bit of Googling and read that the type of cable should be stamped on the power cable itself. All I could find was LS-F7L and I believe this is the power cable type. Can anybody recommend a decent 8-10' power cable? It seems like every site sells the older 3-prong power cable but not the newer style.

So what are some of the best apps that are free to download for this TV?

The apps I use on mine are pretty standard... Netflix, amazon video, plex, Spotify, and hulu.

Plex is used the most and the others are just there to fill time.
