I agree about the whole atmosphere and cinematography part. Wonderful storytelling, but what made it for me was I believed I was experiencing 1930s pre-boom L.A.

I just wanted to add to my post:
I think Roman Polanski having a cameo, walk-on role as the thug with a knife in Chinatown was paying homage to a great director who is famous not only for his acting and directing movies but also for his cameo "walk-on roles " ( The Treasure of Sierra Madre,The Misfits, Love & Bullets, The last Run, etc. etc.) I'm talking about the late, great, John Huston who happens to play Noah Cross in Polanski's Chinatown.

Lots of great info about this movie,(and many others) can be found on imdb.
Here's one example :
Anachronisms: In scene with Gittes, Mulvihill, and Yelburton ("Mulvihill! What are you doing here?"), elevator call buttons are modern, automatic elevator type - they have lights. In the 1930's, elevator call buttons were generally black and had no lights.

As someone who has analyzed the history of California water policy for many years from a sportsman's perspective, my favorite moment from the film is the following dialog between John Huston and Jack Nicholson:

Gittes: "Why are you doing it? How much better can you eat? What can you buy that you
can't already afford?"

Cross: "The future, Mr. Gittes! The future!"

Upon winning this blu-ray, I would encounter "Chinatown" for the first time. One of the classics I have yet to see.

I'd have to go with every scene that includes John Huston, especially his condescending pronunciation of Jake's name as 'Gitts' all the time. Huston was so good that Daniel Day Lewis channeled him in 'There Will Be Blood'! ;-)

Love the whole movie, its atmosphere. Favorite parts would be dialogue between John Huston's & Jack Nicholson's characters. You just knew Huston's character was one you didn't want to cross.

Also, you can tell 'Chinatown' was a big influence on 'L.A. Confidential'.

I swear Polanski actually cut Nicholson when he stuck the knife up Nicholson's nose...but one of my favorite lines was to the detective: "You're dumber than you think I think you are."

The way Gittes times the departure time of an observed car: by sacrificing two cheap watches which he stockpiles in his glove compartment. Neat.
Also love the line about the drowned water commissioner in the middle of a draught.
