Sundown visit!

By chance I ended up in Charlotte NC near to Sundown HQ at the end of an install trip to Alabama. Long story short, Jacob is the man. I'm meeting him tomorrow morning(yep, Saturday) to pick up a few drivers, and meet the man himself. More tomorrow!

A Crestron controlled 123" 3D projection system with a pair of 55" monitors in a classroom, and a couple of other 60" TVs in a lab.

Driving to HQ now. I'll be picking up a few drivers and checking the place out.

What a tidy operation with a ton of promise on the horizon.

The home theater specific drivers are under development, there is some tooling for new baskets in the works. The new castings will be exclusive, and allow for 6" of p2p travel. The SA15 and possibly SA12 will most likely be the next verified by Data-bass, maybe an E12 as well for budget dual opposed.

I have enough enclosures to mess around with these in known environments to get a good handle on their performance comparatively. The crazy stress test for the Zv3 18 will be the Apr 14th show.

I'm not sure I would consider them world class, since I haven't ever finished one(lol) Thank you for the very kind words, from someone with your incredible skillset I consider that a very high compliment.



Jacob was kind enough to show me around. I really dig the vibe he's got going. He has the technical know how/engineering skill to make badass drivers, but also the business sense to keep everything running smoothly. It really is a tidy operation deserving of the growth he is experiencing.

The main room is order processing, a test bench, and shipping and receiving. Every driver is thoroughly inspected and tested before it leaves to the customer. The E, SA, and SD-2 lines arrive assembled, the Z and NS lines are built to order in house. Attached to the main office is a shop where cabinets can be built and a couple of cars can be pulled in to work on. There is also a storage area where all the driver soft parts are stored between the main room and the build room. The main warehouse is a separate building, the demand for product has been so great that his stock is very low for another couple of weeks. His market share is growing, and for good reason. His desire to expand into the home driver market is going to be a good thing for the DIY community.

Being in the process of tooling the new baskets and soft parts is very exciting. Not only does the frame accommodate 6" of travel, but also up to a 6" coil. Speaking of coils, he is using some very very well made coils built on spiral split ZAC formers. I saw a couple of DVC edgewounds that are incredibly clean. All in all the coming months are going to be very exciting indeed. I'm very thankful to have the opportunity to get familiar with the line and help foster some deserved exposure in the DIY market.


I'm very confident about the possibilities with these drivers, and will be evaluating them over the next few weeks. I'll do my best to back up my findings with measurements wherever possible.

As I understand it, the idea with the new frames is that they will no longer be the limiting factor of displacement, there will still be suspension and motor limits, but the new frames will allow crazy implementations that were impossible because they were limited by currently available open tool frame dimensions.

I'm not saying there is or will be a driver capable of that stroke, just communicating the mathematical capabilities and advantage of the new design as it was told to me.

That is up to those guys, no definite timeline. I would hazard a guess the new baskets coming online will have some influence on it. I don't have any insight, other than the fact that the drivers are nasty and worth every penny.
