Budget: nothing set in stone, but would like to stay under $1000 if possible. keep in mind that i will be bringing this across the border into Canada and will more than likely be paying an extra 12% tax on the purchase price.

Size Requirements: none

Room Dimensions: 8' tall ceiling. carpeted floor. see attached picture

Primary Uses: 30% movies, 40% music, 30% gaming

Listening Habits: slightly higher SPL than average

Appearance Requirements: none

Timeframe: none

at first, i was hoping to stay around $500, but the more I read, the more I am tempted to spend. Currently, I am leaning toward a VTF-15H, but I can be easily swayed one way or another. I am using a Paradigm PS-1200 and while it does an adequate job IMO, my exposure to subwoofers is limited so I am betting that a new one would knock my socks off which is exactly what I'm hoping for.

The Epik Empire and Hsu 15H would be my choice in that price range.

From my own experience the VTF-15H was the right way to go and I have similar dimensions that you have with the exception my kitchen is also open to both my den and living and it exceeded my expectations for both dynamics and extension.

epik empire as suggested above would be the logical consideration from a sealed design.

I think the empire would do better with music while the HSU would do better for movies.

I think either would work. My space is slightly larger than yours and I went with the Hsu because I liked all the tuning options and the rock solid customer service and reputation. The 15H is a monster

what about dual $500 subs? i know that the general opinion is buy the best that you can now and save for a second in the future, but i honestly don't see myself logically ever spending $2000+ on bass.

The problem I see with that in some rooms both subs give the best curve collocated which then the customer would have been better severd with the
better sub my room is one of those.

Are you already in BC? Might check out funkywaves.net, maybe a bit more than you were thinking but very nice stuff. Coming to the US and figure just to bring one back? Or are you moving to BC? Or? Just curious where you are/where you're going, to see if you could pickup to save $ on shipping.

I have an Empire and think it'll work fine in your space; mine's similar. Dual Legends might be the ticket, too. I think they're a bit different in terms of room location characteristics due to their dual driver nature, too.

Ya I'm in BC. I use a shipping/receiving place just across the border that charges a few bucks per package and then I bring it back with me. Usually I get through without paying tax, but usually i don't have a monster $1000 subwoofer with me either...

the other option is to go with a SVS sub through their canadian distributor, sonicboomaudio.com. a PB12-NSD would cost $906 shipped to my door, whereas the VTF-15H would be roughly $1150 plus the trip across the border.

I had the fortune of being able to spend a few weeks mountain biking and hanging out in various parts of BC about 10 years back. Gorgeous country up there. Will get back one of these days.

I don't think you'll be unhappy with any of the choices you're considering.

Audioholics rated the PB12-NSD as good in rooms up to 5,000 cubic feet. See the end of this review for the rating. You might consider getting it and running a dual sub configuration with the PS-1200 you already have. Someone else that knows more about dual sub configurations than I do could probably make some good suggestions for placement options to try.

We have a few new products available in the $1000-2000 range, we just don't have the product pages ready yet but they can be ordered.

If I lived in Canada and was shopping for a sub, Funk Audio would be the first place I'd look. Shoot, you are even in position to visit them in person, demo the stuff, and save on shipping and import tax.

Do not forget, Funk Waves is located on the island. So you have to adjust for BC Ferry cost as well. ($50 for SUV)
Depending on where you are located, it could be easier just hoping over border and getting from the depot. But, again no Warranty I believe or rather bothersome warranty.

+$15 for myself, so that's $130 just for the boat ride to and from the island. almost the same price as shipping a VTF-15H to the border.

We are not actually on the Island, we are on the Sunshine Coast, still a ferry out of Horseshoe Bay, but it is half the time and half(pay one way only) the cost. We also have a location in Abbotsford BC we can leave product at for customer pickup.
