Wife wants to replace floor standing HT speakers

I'm looking for recommendations for my home theater sound setup. My wife is not a fan of the big floor standing LR front speakers that have rocked us like a hurricane these past few years. She wants me to replace them with something much smaller. I'm thinking in-wall speakers to the left and right of the plasma are probably the right option, so I'm looking for recommendations. My center channel and rear speakers haven't pissed her off yet, so they can stay. I will have no sub - the floor standers have subs included.

Budget: $500ish.

Ideas?

1) In-wall speakers don't generally sound very good or handle very much power well.

2) Is replacing the wife an option?

3) How about some bookshelf speakers on top of a couple of attractive small tall tables?

Check out the Monitor Audio M2 speakers. They have good full-range performance in a smaller package.

Get a new wife or grow a pair , would be my 1st thoughts....
Really you had that set-up for years & now She bitches about them ?

What did you do to get her soo mad @ you ?

AnyWay have Her drive you to the Bose store & let her pick-out the set of speaks she likes , you pay for them ....

Lol - she has just asked enough times that I'm deciding to do something nice for her. It's not a "demand" nor is it a huge deal for me, so why not make her happy right?

I agree with replacing the wife. A single man is a happy man.

Do what I did and replace my 5.1 with a SOUNDBAR!!!

So what speakers do you have now? Picture would also help.

Unless you can match your center channel to in-wall speakers of the same brand with similar tweeter and drivers, you should replace all three. It's best for the front sound stage to have matching speakers.

Raise the budget a little, and look at 3 of these

If you go the bookshelf route you will likely need to add a separate sub to get a comparable sound.

What soundbar did you get? And how does it compare with your old 5-1?

not a chance, the wife/gf will get free reign in most of the house when it comes to decor, but she can stay the fark away from 2 things, my stereo equipment/room and the garage.

+10!

If you're going to down size to make her happy, at the most switch to some slim towers. Do not give in 99%, or it will be expected with all your stuff!
I'm joining in with the group! (See sig) But if you MUST comply, I'd go for bookshelf speakers before in-wall.
Bookshelf speakers have a larger selection, better price, movable for placement or if you actually move and better sounding overall.
Consider a slim floor standing design like the definitive technologies. That is what I did to shut her up.
No matter what you are going to want a nice compact subwoofer in there somewhere. Bookshelf or slim tower speakers are not going to cut it.

So here's the update. I swapped my towers in the family room with my shelf speakers that had been in the basement. The basement is now crowded but booming (subs in the towers along with the dedicated sub still down there), but the family room sounds pretty hollow. I think I can pick up a modest sub for the family room to rescue the sound up there. Time to peruse the subwoofer threads for recommendations there....

WAF wins out again. Somehow or other you were not able to educate said spouse.

It'll be a cold day in HE double hockey sticks before the GF/wife wins out. I'm willing to bet that there is no argument when it comes to what THEY want or have but it's supposed to be the other way around when a guy wants something? Absolutely not. Not in my house. Let a guy be a guy or we become VERY hard to live with.

Just my 0.02c

Well that is why I have the media room in the basement (which it sounds like the OP has). She can tell me what she likes in the family room, but the basement is my domain.

Funny thing, she actually is enjoying the 125" screen and my new audio system as much as me. She asks me if I want to watch a movie in the basement once we get the little ones to bed

Definitive technology has some nice in walls, but your budget is to low. Life as single man allows me to have towers as my mains and sub is definitive technology super cube reference. Actually, the sub was partially paid for by insurance money due to my system being fried by lightening (act of God).

Check out "the boogieman", just a thought for a non-invasive sub.

You all can say whatever you like about what the wife is making him do, all I hear is," honey, I think you need to go shopping for more audio equipment."

Good luck!
so how about moving the dedicated sub upstairs ? since the floorstanders have their own, you like them, the basement room is 'boomy' already, and it's already paid for ?
It could also give insight into 'how much' sub you may really need in a larger space... or
it'll work fine and no more $$ spent (for now).
I say let her have her way with all the little things you don't care about anyway, like probably 95% , if she's anything like my wife, but stand firm on the 5% that really does matter.
Have you thought about getting custom stands made for your current speakers?

Think you could make that fly?

Is the sound to loud for her with the floorstanding speakers to loud? Does she think that they don't look good with the decor?
LMAO @ this thread and all the "WAF" comments...

Yeah, there's some funny comments but big kudos to the OP, that's one good man right there.

Fortunately, my wife "allows" me the run of my cave
