Cheapest ever HTPC that's decent. Proud of myself. - Page 8

2tb is cheapest price. Almost as good as 500 or 1tb ... Under $100 still and you can get double capacity .

I have seen $89 2TB's recently. I would do that over a $69 500GB drive

$69.99 ASRock H61M/U3S3 LGA 1155 Intel H61 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

$49.99 Intel Celeron G530 Sandy Bridge 2.4GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80623G530

$29.99 G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)

$59.99 (after mail in rebate) OCZ Solid 3 SLD3-25SAT3-60G 2.5" 60GB SATA III MLC

$37.99 APEX DM-318 Black Steel Micro ATX Media Center / Slim HTPC Computer Case w/ ATX12V Flex 275W Power Supply

Cost under $250
I haven't tested this, but I just came up with this simple build for a bedroom media center meant to stream from your NAS or MediaCenter located elsewhere. I will need to build one or two of these soon after we move into our new house, and get rid of the stupid laptop OpenELEC builds I have right now.

$-30.00 - $20 mail in rebate = $109

Total cost $294 shipped.

This has to be the nicest and most capable sub $300 HTPC.

I might upgrade the case PSU and CPU at some point and use these for an office PC. Not my favorite choices but I went economy.

I was suprised I could get high end 120GB SSD performance with 8GB DDR3 1600mhz, on Asrock w decent Sandy CPU for this price. Even the LiteOn is pretty decent as far as optical drives go.

Guess I got another PC build this weekend. I think I might keep this one for a while for myself.

Well-don't pat yourself on the back too hard-I built a quad core htpc for $200 and it's more than capable of playing anything that I throw at it.

specs and links ?

Aren't you the fool that said in my other thread you voted you have used an SSD and would gladly go back to a HDD ???

I am sorry but I can't believe anything you say if that is true. Your judgement must be impaired. lol.

You know those email codes are only valid for the people whose account get those emails, right? "**PROMO CODES ARE NON-TRANSFERABLE and may only be redeemed using the Newegg account attached to this e-mail address."

And that ASUS board doesn't have HDMI.

Ummm ya Mfusick those codes are email specific.

I got that email from Newegg also. I had to go run some errands & when I came back the $13.99 price was gone.
I read the HDD thread & I looked at Staples. The largest HDD they had on their website was a 1.5TB WD Green for $114.99. Also a couple 1TB drives: a WD Green for $109.99 and a WD Black for $139.99.

Micro Center has a 1TB Seagate Barracuda for $94.99 & a 1.5TB Seagate Green for $84.99 in-store only. CompUSA has a 1TB WD Blue for $89.99

From the reviews I've seen, the WD Blue was not rated very well. The 1.5TB Seagate Green was better, or maybe I should say less worse.

I've been reading the threads about Green vs. 7200 rpm drives. Obviously I don't want a slow drive, but I also don't want what might possibly be a noisier fast drive. From what I surmise, the WD Green is variable speed which might contribute to its lack of performance because it takes time to change speeds. Would this mean the Seagate Green which is 5900 rpm might be better because it's speed is fixed?

Presuming I'm going to get an SSD in the near future, is the Seagate Green a decent drive to start with since I do need storage space for OTA recording?

Here's a 1TB for 69.99. It's an external but you can easily take it apart. This was listed on slick deals and I haven't tested the promo, just forwarding the message. It ends today.

Next stop call into customer service.

I have a receipt for it in my inbox.

Big reason to shop newegg.

That's an idea. Thanks.

I actually have that same exact drive but have not used it yet. I bought it for $69.99 right before HDD prices went up. I still may need it for a backup, but I guess I could borrow the insides until then. I'll open it up & take a look.

Sign up for a new egg business account. You can use same email or different email.

Business codes and deals are different and sometimes better than normal Newegg account deals.

  • ASRock A75M - $79.99 (Amazon, No Tax, Free Ship)
  • Patriot Signature Line Memory DDR3 4GB (2x2GB) 1600Mhz - $23.99 (Amazon, No Tax, Free Ship)
  • AMD A6-3500 Retail Box - $69.99 (Fry's via Price Match with Microcenter)
  • OCZ Agility Petrol 64GB SSD *Final Price Pending (Staples)

This is an upgrade of my current HTPC build which is five years old.

The SSD was $82.99. I got a Staples $25 off $75 for $2.50 from Hotcoupons4u to make it $63.99. However I found an additional coupon code for another $23.50 off online purchases, making the final price $39.56 IF the additional code is accepted.

The second code only applies to the San Disk 120GB SSD. If you need a larger SATA II SSD without a rebate, you can stack the coupon code and the discount code - http://slickdeals.net/f/4318066-Stap...off-100-coupon

Review - http://www.storagereview.com/sandisk_extreme_ssd_review

Since there's the impending SSD price war and I don't consider San Disk a "small player", I expect prices on 120GB to drop significantly as summer gets here.

Total with taxes, free shipping on all (Motherboard, Memory, SSD) - $238.16

Not bad for equal CPU performance with Intel's cut-down i3 G-series CPU, but with arse kicking GPU performance. Along with low idle wattage and should be around 30W while watching SD/HD OTA content.
