In my case the end table is pretty close to the HDTV so that aiming the remote toward the HDTV still works. The supplied USB cable is only about 20" long but you can always buy a longer one if needed & hopefully place the IR receiver where it works for you.
Alrightee then.
I thinks I have a plan for mine.
Thanks............

I have lots of CPU cases from the old days. I could tuck one at the end of the sofa but there would be no line-of-sight for the remote.

Link ?

Not sure what you are asking for so....This is what is not currently in service.

Right, you can stick one of these things anywhere granted you have
  • Some airflow
  • Power
  • Network connection
  • Long enough HDMI connector
  • Long USB extender
  • USB to IR receiver (unless going the smartphone over wifi control)

I use these link, but I don't really require a very long run. I just hide my Flirc receivers above the TV so that I don't have to get creative pointing the remote towards the HTPC.

I think as some kind of rule, once you go past 15-18 ft you need a USB extension cable with some built in signal clean up.

Rose will makes some good affordable active USB extenders if your extending beyond 12 frets its better to get active version since you might not get full range from IR dongle or sensors otherwise.

Anyone run a long extender to another room and still use a remote in same room?

Any reason I could not use an IR dongle in HTPC USB port and run an additional active extender to another room ?

My HTPC is hooked up to my projector in same room as HTPC and also a plasma in living room.

New Egg has the Vertex2 Plus for$50. I'm looking for an inexpensive SSD to replace the drive in my sister's netbook, which is slow as molasses. I think 60 gigs would be fine.

I think the cheapest thing going now is this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856119062&nm_mc=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r&cm_mmc=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r-_-Barebone+Systems-_-Foxconn-_-56119062

Plus the 55$ g630 and sub$50 SSD like 120gb vertex 3.

Under $200

Well, again, your link is for Newegg, but they don't have that drive for $50. I think they have the 60 gig version for $75. Hope I come across an online black Friday deal somewhere.

Lol. Yup it was all me!

Seriously it's normally like 69$ or79$ but slick deals had it up for the 59$ sale price and it always goes quick for that.

You get case, PSU and lga1155 mobo for 60$

Add the 49$ vertex3 120gb SSD and some $20 DDR3 and you have a nice little HTPC for under $200 with a nice CPU (g530-i3)

Big fast SSD. 8gb ddr3 and a real sandy CPU. It's not really cutting any corners for a basic set up.

You can even add 3tb storage for 89$ with link I have too

It will happen Friday. Just wait.

Microcenter had vertex 60gb for 29$ too

What is the minimum Intel graphics to look for for Blu ray iso playback (I assume OTA and other things I would need are less demanding than Blu Ray, so I will use that as the benchmark. Is HD2500 sufficient? Something lesser even?

By the way, has Intel fixed the 24hz issue?

Yes. Hd2000 graphics is fine. Hd3000 or hd4000 is good too.

I have not seen the foxconn 1155 barebones recently... did it get discontinued?

Even the link on newegg is gone.

Yup. I don't even have a link on my 'I bought it' page. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856119065R

Edit: Their replacement http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856119079 seems a bit overpriced.

But for those who can't drive to one easy.... the internet is available to all.

I need some help all...

I have an E8500 Core 2 Duo that is socket 775. It was my office PC and is on an Asus Deluxe somthing or other ROG board (it's high end $350ish but I forgot) It was long ago my game machine.

I have no picture on the screen. I tried three different video cards... one brand new. All three work.

I get nothing on the monitor. I am wondering if the CPU went bad ? Or the Motherboard slot for video???

I am thinking it was the slot because I can not get anything on the screen at all- and I was in process of swapping a video card when it happened.

Anyone know a good deal on a 775 motherboard. New or used ??? I want to make my E8500 a part time extender for the TV in the basement

compgeeks usually has some older stuff for cheap. Are you getting any beep codes? BIOS reset? It would be a shame to spend money on old tech.

Thanks for posting your builds, I am planning on rolling my own soon. I would think HTPC/DVRs would be a commodity item these days.

No beep codes. No nothing... Just black screen.
