Sony VPL-VW100 Hard Start Mod Kit - Information Needed

Thread Starter
Sony VPL-VW100 Hard Start Mod Kit Assy.

This seems to have been a common problem, prompting Sony to produce and offer the infamous Hard Start Mod Kit Assy for the earlier model VPL-VW100.

Unfortunately after recently purchasing a VPL-VW100 from a private party (which by the way had very low hours and in excellent condition) and installed a new lamp. At 240 hours I started having the symptoms associated with this problem , snap-snap-snap (Igniter trying to light the lamp). Some nights the unit will start right up, others (and becoming more frequently) it can take 2 to 8 restarts.

Some background information is:
I purchased a Cermax lamp and installed it into my housing.

I first used the standard white heatsink compound (supplied with the lamp)and then changing to the using a 15% silver heatsink compound when I started having a problem. The silver-based compound seemed to work for a short while and it's back to snap-snap again.

My unit serial number is Serial Number 2001192 falling between the S/N 2000001-2003986 meaning it requires the whole $707 kit.

I am amazed that after hours of searching the web, and finding a lot of owners with this problem there is little information is out there regarding solutions to this problem, primarily (and almost to the full extent of) what I have found is “Sony VPL-VW100 Hard Start Mod Kit Mounting Instructions ? and Finally ready to replace my VW100(Ruby) -
My question to other readers and techies is:
• can anyone reference any other informative links regarding information on this particular problem?
• Are there any known workarounds other than paying Sony $707 for the Hard Start Mod Kit (sorry link blocked by AV) i.e. replace or upgrade capacitors, larger or different igniter etc.
• anyone providing an aftermarket parts start Kit for this projector at a fraction of the cost?
• does anyone have photographs or a bill of material showing what the Kit contains? Does the Kit a change out particular electrical components or is it a proprietary printed circuit board change out?
• Lastly does anyone have the electronic documentation that describes the installation of the art start Kit. I have seen it referenced in the it to the links above but have not been able to locate it after an extensive search.

I have been very happy with the projector and the quality of the projected video image, right up to the point of snap-snap-snap.

Again for me, it is peculiar you can find so many references from different people having this problem but no real reference to a solution other than a couple purchasing and installing the Hard Start Module supplied by Sony.

Thanks in advance for anyone having additional information.

Regards,
WDC

AFAIK, this forum is the best source of information and solutions for the VPL-VW100 hard start problem.
You already tried the cheap solution which worked for some, i.e. changing only the thermal paste.
You can download the Hard Start Mod Kit mounting instructions from the link I gave in this post.
Those instructions show how many parts are impacted to achieve a 100% reliable start; since Sony upgraded for free many projectors during their 3 years warranty, I very much doubt they changed anything which did not need to be changed.
I installed this kit 2 years ago, it worked across 2 lamps, and I never had anymore the click-click-click problem.
This kit is expensive, but about the same price as a full LMP-H400 lamp assembly, and in my case I was able to recover a previously "faulty" lamp which started to work again thanks to it.
Beware that the replacement of all those parts is not complicated is you are used to electronic components assembly/disassembly, but you need to take your time and be methodical to avoid any mishap.

I bought my VPL-VW100 in December 2005 and still enjoy its colors more than other projectors without a Xenon lamp; sad Sony did not stick with this technology.

I recently started having similar issues. The unit won't fire up and just "clicks". Eventually the lamp/cover light stays light (solid) and per the manual it stated that the lamp was needing to be replaced. I was far from the 2000 hr lifespan but figured that it just perhaps went bad so dropped $700 bucks on a new one.

I just installed the new lamp and nothing has changed, it just clicks and never lights up.

My serial number is 2005000 + so per my research on AVSForum one would think I don't have the mod start issues, etc.

But it does seem like the lamp is not being ignited / turned on. I have taken the new lamp out and reinstalled it to make sure that everything was connected properly.

Any suggestions on what I can do??

Thanks for any help
