In-Wall 5.1 system...$1000 budget?

We're putting the finishing touches on the new house, and I'm struggling with the speakers for the living room HT system. Can you guys please help? The room is huge (~23'x15',10', open along one side to the kitchen/dining area, etc.), and we need to go in/on-wall for WAF. I've been reading through the threads as much as possible, and have picked up quite a few ideas.

For ~$500, it seems I could put together a 5.1 in-wall system using MonoPrice or AudioSource speakers. For $1500, I can get a low-end on-wall system from Axiom, and they can go on up to $2000+ if I want to spend that much. Now....what would be my best bet for a $1000 budget?

Note: I'm not a huge speaker/audio guy. My last system was a Kenwood HTIB that I bought back in 1999 or so. The room is far from ideal, and we're pretty much locked into in-wall, but I want something that sounds as good as possible, though. Anyone have any recommendations?

First, I want to say that for $1000 you can get some fairly decent conventional speakers, or you can get some in-wall speakers that will deliver much lower sound quality and much lower maximum power. You probably won't like them much.

That is a simple fact you should be aware of.

Having said that, if you are set on in-wall speakers, there are some fairly good ones. They are going to cost you more than $1000.

I would recommend the PSB CW383 speakers for the front L/R speakers; they should cost around $600-700 each.

For the other 3 speakers, the PSB CW262 should do the job; they sell for around $150 each. These have an "aimable' baffle assembly to allow the speaker to be fine-tuned to the listening position, as well as level adjustment switches to adjust for the room balance.

These speakers will sound much better than the others you mentioned IMO.

I suggest that you go to the PSB website and look at the data sheets and specifications brochure which has complete specs and installation diagrams and instructions for each of their in-wall speakers.

In-wall subwoofers have terrible performance. I suggest that you get a conventional subwoofer, such as the Rythmic FV12.

Since the speakers are going to be built in, it is a HUGE mistake to cheap out; get something that will sound decent and last for a while; spare yourself headaches later.

You are getting some very inaccurate information from the above. Inwall speakers can sound just as good as in room speakers. We have speaker manufacturers who are very trusted that have stated as much.

That said, the general consensus is that inwall speakers cost more on average than in room speakers. So you have to do your homework, and I typically would recommend an inwall that has an engineered enclosure. In your price range that may be tough to find unless you consider EBay.
