Onkyo TX-NR609 vs. Yamaha RX-V671

CNET rates the yamaha better and so does this website. What do you think? I am aware of the THX certified onkyo but there seems to be some useful lacking features in the onkyo (like 3D, phone connection, headphone port etc.). Price-wise the yamaha is slightly cheaper. What do you think? I was routing for the Onkyo but after looking at comparison charts...I think I'm changing my mind.

The Onkyo NR609 definitely passes 3D video just like Yamaha.

It also has a heaphone jack and a USB port for connecting a iPhone, iPad, Smartphone, etc. You can easily see that if you look at the front panel.

Where are you getting your info? It doesn't seem to be correct.

Neither the Yamaha RX-V671 nor Onkyo NR609 have Airplay support if that's what you mean.

Wow thanks for pointing that out. Seems like the side-by-side comparison website I was using is totally screwed up! Having noticed that, Onkyo is top in my list again I guess...yeah no airplay support is kind of a bummer but that will do.

Your second link is totally wrong as the Onkyo has

3D capability
DLNA certified
Headphone Jack
Phone connection

Sounds like either one would meet your requirements.

I will say the Yamaha receivers have been more reliable than Onkyo over the past few years.

If you want Airplay support get a Denon, Marantz or Pioneer.

Both are good avr's, with lots of features per dollar. Onkyo probably gets the nod as far as features go, though Yamaha has superior build quality and reliability. Given that the feature sets are nearly identical I would give the nod to yamaha if priced the same, two recalls in a row has more less kept me from feeling comfortable recommending Onkyo for time being.

How about performance? THD and response bandwidth (not to mention THX certification) for example.

I doubt you could tell a difference between the two, I think specs are about the same.. As far as THX certification, that doesn't mean as much as it used to. Most modern avrs meet THX spec, they just don't pay for the licensing fees to become certified. All you would be missing is the THX sound modes.

Have to agree just returned my third NR609 after failure of the HDMI board twice and problems with power supply failures. Always had Denon or Yamaha previously and never any problems.Had the dealer swap the Onkyo for RX-V671 and am very happy. would say the yamaha sounds better than the Onkyo also looks and feels better built. These Onkyo's may give a great performance but at the expense of what appears to be fragility. Don't think I'll be buying anything from them in the future

Don't forget the RX-A710. Unfortunately mine had HDCP and HDMI handshake problems and had to go back.

However this receiver is only $50 more than the RX-V671 and has a lot of performance features in build quality and amp design, over the 671.

Also there's the Denon AVR-2112ci but it is limited in component connection and doesn't even offer a basic recording loop for a Tivo, S-VHS VCR, DVD-Recorder, CD-Recorder or any type of recorder.

I just get a sour taste in my mouth after have 3 straight Defective Yamaha receivers in a row, RX-V596, RX-V2300, and the RX-A710. Of course I would not chance an Onkyo receiver at all. Even their website states their problems and how to send them in.

I don't trust many of them anymore. Yamaha, Onkyo or HK (which was always designed flawed).

People seem to have the best luck with Pioneer/Pioneer Elite, Sony/Sony ES, Denon, or Marantz.

I would go with the Denon 2112 myself.

+1

The MultEQ XT will make a bigger difference with sound qualiy than the THX will. Also the 2312 is pretty cheap now as well. Check out this thread to find a great price: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1409071
