Question about wirelessly watching Movies on TV.

I have multiple hard drives with movies on them (MKV's) and multiple TV's. Let's say all the HDD are in a central location and I wanted to be able to access any hard drive from any TV to watch any of the movies. Is there anything that would be able to make this work? What could I connect to each TV/HDD?

The TV's don't have wireless built in. One of the Hard drives is an NAS.

One possibility is to connect all HDDs to something through USB that allows you to connect via wifi. But then what device would I use with the TVs to connect wirelessly and watch those movies. Preferably to keep the resolution and audio.

And then iTunes. I understand there's a way to put MKVs into your iTunes library, but would the quality stay the same? Then I guess I could just use AppleTV to connect to the iTunes. Only problem with that is that each HDD would have to be connected to a computer. Well actually that might be more convenient if I had to download some more movies, might make things easier. I dunno guys, help?

Directv boxes have a way you can connect to a USB devise connected to your router. In my case I use an 8 GB thumb-drive. I can stream movies and pics that way. I personally prefer hard wired as it is faster and more reliable.

Standard procedure is:

Pool all your HDD into a file server.

then,

If TV(s) have DLNA then that's all your need to talk to the file server.

If TV(s) have no DLNA then u need a box like the Apple TV on each TV that doesn't have DLNA.

Apple TV + iTunes is probly the consistent way to have all TV work the same way.

Apple TV does allow wireless but 8/10 people here recommend that you go wired. It's mandatory if you have multiple TV talking to the file server concurrently.

Okay, so then I'd have to get a super long ethernet cable for each TV and go straight to the router? Or is there a way around it? I'd rather go wired because 720p is not going to be easily transferable through WiFi, I just don't want wires flying everywhere. So I'm just trying to figure out the best way to set all of this up without losing quality.

A single Ethernet cable can be as long as 100 meters, so as long as u stay within this limit it's peachy.

If u don't want/can't run new ethernet cables, there are "power wires" solutions, has limitations, up to u to do research. This is not an endorsement, just giving you possible options to ponder.

I use an app called Air Video

It streams my movies (via a small server app) to my iphone (or ipod touch or ipad). Then I tell the iphone to play the movie on one of my apple tvs in the house via apples built in airplay. Works well, and while i can't confirm the exact specs of the video, it does look good on each of the TVs.

I also use the airplay to listen to Music all around the house, but that is built into iTunes.

None of the TVs i use this on have any sort of surround sound setup on them, so I can't add in whether they still have 5.1/etc.

I have them all on Wireless N currently (2 aTVs, and an airport express on G)
