Acer actually has a cheap model: AMD C-50 based Iconia W500. Loads of users have loaded Win 8 on it and its runs quite well. Plenty of YT videos on the topic. However, the battery life isn't that great as compared to the Samsung slate, which runs for over $1000.
And that is the biggest challenge; getting 8-10 hrs of battery, whilst keeping it below $600.
MS has already said that Win 8 RT (the ARM version) will not run any x86 software, only the Metro Apps.
