Upgrading my Paradigms, how does this sound? - Page 2

There is absolutely nothing wrong with different surround speakers from the fronts, brand wise. Especially since you are using these for pretty much just home theater. I have listened to the Paradigm Studio 20's, as well as the SVS speakers. I personally liked the Ascends much more than the others. They threw up a better sound stage, were more detailed, and sounded more revealing than the others as well. I ended up purchasing the Sierra-1's. I actually enjoy my Definitive Technology set-up more than the Ascends, for home theater, but, the Ascends smoke the Def Techs for music listening. Hope this helps!

I have paradigm studio 10s that are great speakers. I read good things about the sierra nrt bookshelf as well. Given your wife wants better music quality I'd make that my number one priority and go from there. From what I've read in this thread the best musical bookshelf speakers are the paradigm studio and sierra-1. The monitor 7 is probably not bad either, just a level down from the studio series, it does have some trickle down technology from the studio series.

Did you consider the option of staying in your budget and not buying the whole 5.1 at once? Buy the bookshelf, center and sub for your budget and wait on the surrounds you want. I would much rather go higher end and plan to add more later. I read so many in these threads who having to have all 5.1 or 7.1 make compromises with quality to stay in a budget. If your going to have to make compromises to stay in a budget think about compromising on a kick ass 3.1 or even 2.1 and deal with the rest later.

OP- keep in mind that the Sierra-1 towers were said to be better, or at a minimum, equall to the Paradigm Signature 8's, by one of our members here at avs. I believe that he did an a/b between the two at a get together. If my memory serves me correct, I believe that most of the other participants agreed.

Now granted I realize that you are only looking at the Sierra-1's, not the towers, but, the Sierra-1's share the same tweeter and overall voicing of the Sierra Towers. So with that in mind, I think that it is safe to say, you can at least count on the Sierra-1's to match the Paradigm Signature S1's. Which is a huge step up from the Studio 10 or even the Studio 20!

Interesting extraction of thought process....

Original Sierra 1's with the dome tweeter as opposed to the Ribbons on the new Ascend tower vs the Paradigm Sigs ?

I was present at most of the GTG's owning Paradigm Studios, Sigs with Be tweeter and without and Salks SS now....

I would def give the thumbs up for the new ascends for all duties with the NEW crossover that is... But they are certainly different then the towers and sig s8's mentioned with them being a 2 way....
