Total Recall Special Edition (1990) - Page 6

The framing is slightly different which is usually an indicator of a new scan. The film grain looks far, far more natural, as well. As far as not seeing a ton more detail, probably largely a factor of the photography. Those new shots look great, looking forward to this. I am not buying the usual AVS conspiracy theories on this one (i.e., studio: "Yeah, let's trick those AVS weenies and use a fake grain effect while manipulating the color framing, and contrast. Bahahaha").

Not sure what people expect really, the detail looks about in line with other films shot on the mid/late-80s high speed film stocks, like Aliens, Criterion's 4K transfer of Broadcast News, the remastered Wall Street...

For the record I never said the older version looked better. I was just trying to present information that may be beneficial to some. I'm still buying the special edition, even though I'm not really in love with the new color timing. But I do like the fact it's not slathered with DNR and edge enhancement. And I don't think Sharon Stone has ever looked hotter.

Is this Special Edition different from the Australian Special Edition (Universal/Studio Canal) released in 2010?

I also have a UK Studio Canal version from 2008: too many versions floating around.

@IanD
Yeah it's different.
This Blu-ray boasts a new, director-supervised transfer. Normally... biggrin.gif

Pretty sure that was Fox funded

Does it matter? The transfer was done by Criterion, but at 2K not 4K.

Accuracy in a thread where carefully chosen words are at issue is paramount

Annoying that they call both versions Special Edition then, as it becomes difficult to distinguish between them: for all the consumer knows, the 2012 version could just be a repackaging/re-release of the 2010 Aussie SE.

In fact, without someone identifying any benefits of the 2012 version, I would be more likely to think the 2012 SE was a re-release of the 2010 SE and not bother to re-purchase. If the studio wants my money in a multiple dip, they really have to make more of an effort to sell me on it and that means ensuring it doesn't get confused with previous releases.

The new release is called the "Mind-Bending Edition" in North America, and the "Ultimate Rekall Edition" in the UK.

Those caps look great. Wish they could get ROBOCOP looking that good.

The remake is coming out next year so there's a good chance. I wonder which Verhoeven film are they going to remake next? biggrin.gif

Update: Okay, it looks like Starship Troopers will be next.

I was going to make a joke about Showgirls, but then I remembered that last year's Burlesque was pretty much a PG-13 remake of that already.
And speaking of Showgirls, it was beautifully remastered for the Blu-ray release by MGM. More hope for remastered RoboCop. cool.gif

That Blu-Ray.com review is very hopeful. I'm definitely getting this (again!) tongue.gif

Really people? Reviews? From that site....

New transfer look very Aliens. Strong teal push and similar grain density and sharpness.

I liked (mostly) with what they did with Aliens, so I will be pretty stoked for this Total Recall wink.gif

I was looking at my Total Recall BD last night., It has DTS-HI RES 6.1 audio. Isn't this new version only in 5.1? I'm guessing it should be using a lossless HD Audio codec instead of a lossy one like the older BD?

The middle two may not be the exact same frames given how still those shots are.
Yeah based on those, the 2008 release looks much better. The new shots have weird color timing, and are darker. There is only more detail in that one shot of the wall next to Arnold. Is this new color timing the way it was always meant to look supposedly? Because the 1st shot has a green Matrix tint...

Haven't heard anything to suggest that was the intent. I imagine it's how Verhoeven meant it to look in 2012.

Unfortunate that people still confuse sharpening with real detail..

An explanation for why the light levels were lowered for this sequence is the intent to replicate evening conditions because that's where the scene ends. Digital colorists having the ability to alter the lighting outside the windows—this is a missed opportunity to actually play the scene at night.

It looks like crap, and looks like took 10 mins and is far from state of the art.

And what would "state of the art" look like?

I don't see how this is lower quality than those transfers, considering the visual content, format, and film stock it was shot on. Do you have the UK disc already or are we still talking screenshots?

Are you seriously joking? I am shocked you made that statement that this

338

Looks as good as this

338

I can not take anything you say about PQ seriously in the future, that dark shot has more in common with the Dracula disc.

I don't judge a transfer by one screenshot from one scene. Which conveniently happens to be the worst looking screenshot you can find. Ridiculous.

You said it, a great transfer should not even have that frame in it, let alone a whole scene.
