Why do you think the new US release will be on a single layer disc?

There is no NC-17 version. After the director went through hell on Robocop, he made sure to use a lot of angles to shoot the violent aspects of Total Recall and when the MPAA would object to something, he would change the angle used rather than cut and for the most part, it worked. He didn't have to cut much at all. And he is happy with the finished product.

Nope, tis well known and there was a bootleg out there once

Film was initially given an X-rating by the MPAA. The following are the scenes that were trimmed to receive a R-rating:
Benny's death is optically cropped to remove the exiting drill erupting from his stomach.
The innocent bystander used as a shield was bloodier before trimming.
The stabbing of Helm in the bar had the bowie knife slicing up his stomach. Stills of this were actually featured in Fangoria magazine at the time of the film's release.
Several shots of the scientists being killed by Quaid after he breaks free from the implant-machine were shortened.
The scene of Richter's arms being severed was shortened.

That will be a new transfer then, but is this the NEW transfer? or just the old other one? been a long time since I looked

That looks like the UK version which has been around for a while; 'boosted' contrast -resulting in clipping and less dynamic range, and sharpening -EE all around the frame gives it away.

The original US version has video artifacts but without EE or contrast boosting.

I hope the transfer does not feature a teal/orange color timing with boosted contrast or any filtering. Never seen the original cut, although for me the omission is not a big deal would be nice to have the choice though.

**Read a little further so this is indeed the new director approved transfer? Good grief, what a POS. #9 Exhibits strong DNR.

Hmm... We'll have to watch this closely.

According to caps-a-holic, this is nearly identical to the previous Kinowelt disc. Is that the same as the UK disc?

From today's My Two Cents:

Quote:

First of all, Lionsgate has revealed more of its July Blu-ray and DVD release slate and it includes some good titles. Look for Battle Force (DVD) on 7/3, Barney: All About Opposites (DVD), Yimou Zhang's The Flowers of War (BD & DVD), Thomas & Friends: Schoolhouse Delivery (DVD) and You're Nobody Till Somebody Kills You (DVD) on 7/10, Friends With Kids (BD & DVD) and Timmy Time: Happy Birthday Timmy (DVD) on 7/17, Boss: Season One (BD & DVD) and The Monitor (DVD) on 7/24 and the Total Recall: Mind-Bending Edition (BD), La Grande Illusion (BD) and Cole Younger and the Black Train (BD) on 7/31.

Total Recall (SRP $14.99) will feature "an all-new director approved, high-definition transfer from the original film negative" and both new and legacy extras, including an all-new interview with director Paul Verhoeven, an all-new Restoration Comparison featurette, audio commentary with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Paul Verhoeven, the Imagining Total Recall documentary, 2 featurettes (Models and Skeletons: The Special Effects of Total Recall and Making of), a photo gallery and the film's theatrical trailer.

http://thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents

"An all-new director approved, high-definition transfer from the original camera negative" could, I suppose, mean anything. The "all-new" part would suggest it isn't one of the existing transfers, though.

detail or not, they turned Mars ORANGE....I mean, common, I remember seeing this in the theaters and Mars was RED. I'll keep my UK version, which is not perfect, but will stay in my collection.....
mind-bending edition??? really....that's worse than 'ultimate hunter edition'. This could spell very bad news and I'm not being optimistic here.....

As of today there are 3 diffrent "videostreams":

1. VC-1 @ 19948 - HD DVD, Kinowelt BD, Optimum BD
2. AVC @ 17717 - Studio Canal BD (DE and FR)
3. MPEG-2 @ 22830 - Lionsgate BD

you can compare all of them here:

http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleich...?hd_multiID=63

I hope they don't use any of these for the new LG BD. Even the "best" is full of videonoise and an appalling orange tint.

I didn't mean nothing was cut. But Verhoeven is happy with the R rated cut. He made sure to shoot alternate angles and softer version so as not to be out of room in the editing bay. Had he wanted an NC-17 cut to be shown, we would have seen it by now on Laserdisc or DVD.

From what I am seeing of the captures, it's slightly cropped. Slightly. And certainly more detailed and vibrant. But I think it does have a kind of digital look. I really want to see this in motion.

Summer of 1990The release prints of Total Recall never looked pristine to the frustration of its cinematographer. I'm optimisticcautiously about the final restored look approved by the director.

Well, let's hope that we don't end up with a Total Recall MBE and Predator UHE two-pack.

It would be an ironic shame if TR 1990 was smoothed out with DNR while TR 2012 had fake grain added to make it "look grittier". LOL

That's what Blu-Ray.com says on the package specs but it's possible Lionsgate may use a BD-50 since they have been releasing the few re-mastered titles they have gone back to using those discs.

Their system automatically copies information from previous release and their database moderators don't bother to change it. It is incorrect.

It is probably only to be seen in a private work-print copy that the director or producer has since they had to go back and re-edit the film to trim some violent shots.

Technically, according to Wikipedia (never wrong), it was originally rated X, not NC-17. But that's not what's interesting. Also according to Wikipedia:

Quote:

Sequel
Due to the success of the movie, a sequel was written with the script title Total Recall 2, and with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character still Douglas Quaid, now working as a reformed law enforcer. The sequel was based on another Philip K. Dick short story, “The Minority Report,” which hypothesizes about a future where a crime can be solved before it’s committed—in the movie, the clairvoyants would be Martian mutants. The sequel was not filmed, but the script survived and it was changed drastically and contained greater elements from the original short story. The story was eventually adapted as a science fiction thriller as Minority Report by Steven Spielberg and opened in 2002 to box-office success and critical acclaim.

I never would have put those two films together. It's a shame we didn't ever get the Awnuld version of Minority Report! haha

"Hey Richtah, I know da fyootcha and in it you aw dead."

X changed to NC-17 in 1990 so it was one of the films on the cusp, so I said NC-17 to avoid confusion.

I am glad we didn't get the Arnie version, like the sequel to commando it turned out to a better film then it ever could have been

They should re-record the commentary track WITHOUT Arnold.

Worst ever, and he got paid like 30.000 for it or something?

You should try to listen to Terminator 3 commentary with Arnold especially when T-101 made his screen appearance. Arnold was so concern with the appearance of his naked body (yes, Arnold said his naked body).

Will be interesting after Arnold makes another terminator movie and then listen to his commentary. Maybe he will say you'll be terminated if you don't think his old naked body is up to the terminator standard.
