Total Recall Special Edition (1990) - Page 15

I finished watching this on Saturday. Overall I really liked it much much better than the previous US BD release... Although the one scene that really stood out to me as looking bad was the scene before Cohaagen kicked over the fish tank. With the martian background. That scene really looked bad to me compared to the rest of the movie.

That's an optical. It is what it is.

The opening credits are actually blacker-than-black, so it is unusual that the end credits sit atop near-black.
Wanna see something weird though? Pay close attention to the opening logos in a dark room. After the Tristar logo, there's about a second of "black" that hovers in the low 20s (on 16-235), and then over the course of a half-second there's a gradual fade down to true black, followed immediately by the Carolco logo. Feels sort of like the lights going down in a theater. Odd choice, but a choice and not a technical fault of constantly-raised blacks.
A couple comparisons of US 2006 vs UK 2008 vs 2012.

Thanks for posting these, I have the UK version and have been debating replacing it with this but after looking at these caps I'm not sure, they all look kinda lousy to me.

That's our Total Recall ::Reading Rainbow bumper music::

Saw the disc a few days ago, was pretty happy with it. What I don't understand is the people complaining about the changing hues of Mars throughout the film... it looked entirely consistent to me when you account for a day/night cycle.

As for the video, it looks exactly like the screen shots. It looks like something filmed in the 80's, it looks like a relatively fine grained transfer from a new scan of the negative, and overall it looks a bit too bright without the deep, contrasty blacks we're all used to in modern film. People keep talking about the director of cinematography not being happy with the theatrical relase of Total Recall because the image looked flat and washed out and that's what's on display here.

So, in the scene where Cohaagen is tearing Richter a new one, the camera's on Michael Ironside and he's lit with a pinky-red hue, it cuts to Ronny Cox and then back to Ironside, who's now lit with a strong orange tone. That's one quick-ass day/night cycle.

I have the same problem of seeing frame skips. It's really annoying. I'm playing it back on a Panasonic DMP-BDT110 outputing 1080p/60 using HDMI to a Panasonic TC-P55GT30. Is there any way of fixing this problem? Is there a Blu-Ray player that doesn't have this problem with this type of disc? This is the only Blu-Ray that does this of the 150+ discs that I own.

It's the TV, not the player. I have the same player and don't have skipping set on 24p mode. Another person reported the issue with a Panasonic plasma too.

Yeah, that's the biggest offender of the entire disc, IMO.

Worst ever, and he got paid like 30.000 for it or something?

On the other hand, one could make the argument that Ahnald's commentary for this movie is the absolute best. ever.

Was he under the impression that Verhoeven had not seen the movie?

Was he under the impression that he was governor of California??? All politics aside, I couldn't have seen anyone else that could have played in this macho movie. I love it! smile.gif

No, I didn't get that vibe at all listening to the commentary. If anything, I felt Ah-nowd was at times clumsily trying to be in character to explain his character's motivations, feelings and reactions to situations. which could have literally been done like a comic book with thought balloons over Arnie's character's head. See.....?

If you have the original BD, then we'd like you to compare the both of them. If you don't, then it means nothing if you have the newest...all we want to know is...do we double dip???

Check out my avatar...that's me with Ray Harryhausen...my most prized posession!

I'd like to know how it compares to the UK edition which I own.

There are plenty of comparisons, both via written word and screenshot, if you read through the thread. And since it seems to be pretty evenly split between this new release and the Optimum UK release, you probably won't get a definitive answer.

Compared to the original US release, either the Optimum UK release or this new release is a clear upgrade. Check out the screenshots and buy whichever one you prefer.

I have the previous US BD release. I thought overall this new one definitely looked and sounded better. For only $8 it was easily worth a double dip.
This newly remastered Total Recall looks WAY better than the old Blu-ray, and is available for under ten bucks. Why not double dip?
watching the UK edition I noticed that the blacks weren't that okay in every scene. The extras with the director interview reveild(spelling?) pictures with better blacks than the actual feature. Especially the "morning" scene with Arlold and Stone. The same scene has deeper blacks in the interview with Verhoven. I wonder if the US edition have deeper blacks overall?
Just double dipped and put in the new one. The beginning credits were very red. Popped in the old BD and the beginning credits in red were faded. Finally popped in the SD in the round red Mars package and it was the same as the old BD, faded colors.

This edition is a "DOUBLE DIPPER," so sell off your old BD!

The UK version is a travesty: really green, huge contrast boost, a ton of DNR. MBE is vastly superior.
Travesty? Huge? Ton? Hyperbole much?

LOL, I listened to a brief portion of the commentary but Ahnuld's "insights" were just laughably superficial. The transfer does look rather nice, however. smile.gif
