I'm thinking about picking up a UN40EH5300 at the local Wally-world. I am by no means a videophile, but do want good picture quality and do have a few concerns. It is going in a family room, not much direct sunlight, the room is generally pretty dim. I want the 40 inch because it will probably be wall-mounted between two built-in cabinets/bookcases. I have about 49.5" between the book cases. The room is very narrow, so there won't be much off-angle viewing, it is pretty much dead on. The family room is open to the kitchen and while the majority of the viewing will be done from 7-10', it will need to be viewable from 20-30' as well. I could go with other TVs up to 43", but most 46" sets will probably not fit the space.
It will be the TV primarily used for television viewing by the family, but is not the "home theater" or "gaming" TV. That lives elsewhere. I have Dish service and this TV will be TV#2 on my current box, so it will primarily only be used for SD programming. The kids will watch DVDs on it quite a bit, and I may throw a Blu-ray on it as well in time.
My concerns: 1) the 60 Hz refresh rate and all the motion blur comments in this thread. How well will this TV handle the SD programming? I've often heard that Plasma TVs may handle SD better due to the higher refresh rate smoothing the image. Is there any truth to this? My wife didn't like the two plasma options in the store, she said they looked washed out compared to the LED sets they were sitting next to. I tried to explain that is because they are in a brightly lit store, not our dim family room. She doesn't care. Reference Panasonic TC-P42X5 and Samsung PN43E450.
2) Nobody on the thread is saying anything about the sound. How is it? Am I going to need a sound bar with it? I don't think I have the space or need to go with a full home theater system, but I don't want tiny sound either.
Other non-LED options I'm considering are the Sony KDL-40BX450, and the Vizio E3D42OVX (Don't need or really want the 3D yet, but at only $60 more the kids could finally watch that Cars2 3D Blu-ray they got for Christmas.
The EH5300 seems like the best of the options I'm looking at staying around the $500.00 range. I'd prefer to buy local (which really means Wal-Mart), but I'm not against site-to-store. Based on what I'm wanting do you guys think the EH5300 is a good fit, one of the others, or something else I'm not thinking about? Thanks in advance!
