Viewsonic Pro8200 or BenQ w1060

Looking for a budget DLP projector and have come to the conclusion of the Pro8200 which I can get for $719.99 or the W1060 for $683... They will be projecting onto a 125" Seymour AT screen from Jamestown... This is not a dedicated room but is partially light controlled. Has anyone compared these two projectors and have an opinion either way? Thanks much!

I have not seen this particular Benq as it must be a newer model that came out fairly recently, I have seen the Benq w1100, w1200, and w6000. This one looks like a lower cost version of the w1200 sort of. I own the VS Pro8200...

The Viewsonic has a LOT of vertical offset (16.8" for 100" screen), so you need higher ceilings for big screens, the Benq works better with a lower ceiling since it only has 7.3" of offset per 100" screen.

I didn't see any really in-depth reviews of the PJ online either (there were a couple generic reviews).

If going by the other Benq designs (except the more expensive w6000), the Benq might have gaming lag. It would probably be a tiny bit sharper than the Viewsonic, but not much as to matter in most viewing. We will not know if it has the gaming lag issue though until someone tests it.

The Viewsonic has a 3-year warranty and might be slightly brighter in best mode (most likely it will only be a little brighter). I think either projector would be similar, but it is not possible to know which one is better yet. I doubt anyone in these forums has compared these two, I don't even think there are many (if any) owners of this PJ yet.

I'm sure that will change soon though at that price.

Congrats, You have definitely narrowed it down to two of the best low budget DLP's.
The user reviews for the w1060 are very good.
I chated with one guy who returned a w1200 because of audio lag issues and he thought the w1060 was even better in terms of blacks and no audio lag. As far as gaming goes I have read dozens of reviews most of which out of the U.K. and have seen no complaints of lag or rainbows.

But the w1060 is a 3x color wheel which leads one to believe it will show rainbows to those that are more susceptible to them.
The nice thing about going with the pro8200 is the support thread here and coderguy has a thread for calibration also.

By the way where are you getting those prices because I am going to pull the trigger on one or the other myself?

That was some good info from JohnathanG.

The 3x color wheel would be the deal-breaker for me. Not only does the VS have a 4x color wheel, but it's a 7-segment instead of 6-segment, which means the RBE on the Viewsonic is going to be hugely lower than a 3x color (the Viewsonic's color wheel is even better than other projector's 4x color wheels). You could almost call Viewsonic a 5x color wheel, since essentially the RBE is about the same as most 5x.

I would only go for a 3x color wheel if you are absolutely sure you are not sensitive to rainbows at this speed. With the VS, less than 10% are going to be affected by RBE if the projector is calibrated at the correct brightness, at a 3x color wheel it could potentially affect as many as 1 in 4 people. I used to own a Mits hc4000 (4x - 6 seg), and the RBE was too much even on that one for me, but on the Viewsonic I almost never see it.

The w1060 looks like a great projector looking at the specs. It does sync at 24p, which the pro8200 does not.

But this might be the achilles heel:

0.62" DLP(1)
Colour Wheel Speed
3x Speed
Colour Wheel Segments
6 Segments (RGBCYW)
http://www.projectisle.com.au/Produc...x?ProdID=27633

This might explain why the projector is relatively bright with a 190w bulb.

The pro8200 has a seven segment RGBYCB wheel and a 240w bubl. I very rarely see rainbows with it and then usually at the credits with a black/white image.

The pro8200 throws a very good pricture with clean signals. HDTV and blu ray are great. SDtv not so much, which probably is a function of a less expensive processor.

I'd love to see a comprehensive review of the projector. The reviews floating around the internet seem to be impressions, not tests.

Hey BSE - Good to see you back here...

SD looks pretty bad even on expensive projectors. The only way I know of to get it looking better is to use a $1,500 LUMAGEN, but even then it won't look that good. The more expensive JVC I own has some better processing options for SD-Signals, it can make it look a little better, but not much. (barely noticeable difference)

Thanks for all the replies guys... I have 8 foot ceilings so I don't think that will be a deciding factor. I don't get affected by RBE... The 3 year warranty seems like the thing that will really separate the two PJ's... @JonathanG I have a neweggbusiness account and a 10% coupon I haven't used yet... One other bonus with the VS is you can get an 80" Elite Screen and a mount Free with rebate, you just have to pay shipping. I will let you know what I decide...

Thanks Coderguy. I've just been enjoying my projector.

With the 6 segment color wheel RGBCYW, I wonder if it's an updated w1000? Projector Central has a review of the w1100, which is a 1080p with the same color wheel.

The projector looks like the benq 720p projectors rather than the w1100-1200 models, which leads me to believe it's an update of the w1000.
