switched outlet- plz help w/ relay choice

Need some help from you folks-

I want to build a switched outlet rated at 30 amps (pro amp sub power) that I can turn on w/ the 120V out on the back of my receiver. There's a great thread that documents this, only the relay listed is no longer offered (at least that I can find).

I found this relay, but I don't totally understand all of the nomenclature.

If you mag up the picture, "30A 240VAC" is printed on the relay. I would assume (always frought with adventure) that 30 amps at 120V wouldn't be a problem...

Would this relay work as a substitute? If not, what would?

Yes it will work fine. There is a link to the Datasheet on that product page that goes into greater detail.

I do not believe the 30A limit is a function of voltage. The internal wiring has a constant resistance (R) and a thermal limit at which it will fail represented as Power (P) in the following equation: P = I^2 * R. So given internal wiring resistance (R) is a set value, the device will only reach the maximum Power (P) for a given max current (I).

Long story short, in this case 30A is 30A.

^^ Relay/breaker contact ratings have nothing whatsoever to do with the resistance of the cabling. It is about the contact's ability to make/break under load and not fail in some manner.

Those Schneider relays will be fine; you will never be making/breaking near their capacity.

Thanks guys for the help. I was cruising around a bit more and came upon this other great thread- not sure how I missed it the first time.

Maybe Notnyt can let us know how his 12v triggered 30A relays are holding up. He didn't mention whether or not he added a snubber to his upgraded relay choice, and I'd like to know what he did.
