Playon + free Roku

How is the playon service? Lifetime playon PLUS a Roku LT seems like a good deal. Is there a catch?

The deal boils down to $30 for a lifetime license for PlayOn - counting the amount of channels and 3rd party scripts, you will get your $30 worth out of PO and many times more

I've had a lifetime license for quite some time - and I purchased my daughter and lifetime license with the Roku LT a couple months ago

I'd say go for it - PO works fine in 6 media boxes I own (3 different brands)

There's no catch!!

Even though I have PlayOn lifetime (w/ a WD Live) and have gotten my money's worth by using it, I can't say that I fully recommend it if you're doing internet streaming. It works fine for streaming your own media but the internet channels/plugins can be hit or miss. A large number of the streams are unavailable on my WD Live. Could be a combination of the WD Live and the service itself. The Android app also doesn't work very well for me.

I've switched to Plex for my own media and it works better on my WD Live. Also integrates with Roku. I prefer Plex mainly because it pulls all the metadata into a simple interface for my movies & TV shows. It also has a client if you want to run it on a PC connected to a TV. There aren't as many Internet plugins for Plex but they stream a bit better than PlayOn. Android app works much better for streaming my media away from home.

You'd still come out cheaper with Plex because it's free and Roku retails for less than Playon's package price.

I actually have a WD Live...The only reason I was looking into a roku was that the lifetime free for only $80 (Roku + PO) seemed like a great deal as opposed to paying $30 a year. I'm worried about wireless only ad I'm connected via ethernet on my WD Live. Do they offer a lifetime for the WD Live? I'm not familiar with Plex...you think i should look at that instead of playon?

So people still use playon? Can't say as I've used my playon license for a couple of years; since, ..well since I got a roku player.

I tried out the playon free trial last night. It seemed liked Hulu made up the majority of channels. When I accessed other channels then hulu like ABC...NBC..etc. It displayed that it was actually hulu. the standard def was borderline unwatchable. I'm thinking about getting hulu+...How is the resolution for the plus, and is it worth the $8 a month?

It is a very, very good deal.
LT is very reliable in a pretty tough location,
and PlayOn expends your choices tremendously.
If you have a computer on your network running 24/7, or at least often enough to have the latest OS updates, PlayOn is a must.

Image wise it compares nicely. The commercials are short and they drive me nuts... especially since I think there are only 3 of them that endlessly repeat.

Movie wise they are mostly indie. If they happen to have a TV series you never caught it might be worthwhile. I used it free for a month a long time ago and found one series (certain season if I remember) to view. Later on TiVo gave me six months for free and I spent less than an hour with it over that time...

It was even better when they ran out of Roku LTs. They gave me a $50 gift card to use for what I wanted since PLAY ON couldn't ship me an LT. I finally picked up a Roku 2 XD for $60 (as my secondary ROkU2) this week after best buy sent me a $10 off coupon because they were closing one of the stores in this area.

I use PlayonTV with my Roku to view ESPN3 programming on my HD TV. Works well.

They don't officially support it.

In fact, they'll close down your thread over on the Roku forum if you try to ask about it.

As far as I know, it works alright, though. But I'll let others that actually have it answer that (it worked fine for me when I had the free trial, a few months back).

I just set up playon on my Roku. The standard definition plays fluidly but the picture quality in sd is pretty bad. How do you watch HD streaming from your pc on the Roku through Playon?
