Outdoor speakers with good bass

Has anyone recently researched outdoor speakers? I'd like to find a pair with the best bass (as best as it could be). I was leaning towards the Klipsch 650's or Def Tech 6500's as the drivers are rather large. Also the BA Voyager has a 7" driver I believe. Maybe the B&W but that is a bit out of my price range. Any type of insight would be helpful.

I have the dt6500's and like them. The "racetrack" bass radiator helps the low end output.

Have you listened to any others? That radiator is what put them on my short list.

I have an el-cheapo Audiosource "sub" that's been living on my covered patio faithfully for the past six years - through rain, hail, fog, freezes, a hurricane or two and in the dark of night and still serves me to this day. Don't be afraid to supplement outdoor speakers with a sub or two (Parts Express?) It's truly amazing how well bass sounds when there are no boundaries.

I thought of going that route, as there are a few outdoor subs available. Is the audio source made for outdoors? I think JBL makes a large one. I also read about one you actually bury...but haven't seen it for sale yet. Not sure who makes it.

Look at the JBL Control 28, Control 29AV-1 or the Control 30 speakers.

I have a these on my deck with the sub and love them. Definitely think a sub is the best way to go with outdoor areas. Found the whole pkg at Fry's for $400 a couple of years ago.

That's it. Anyone have any experience with it?

Anymore replies to this thread? I'm also looking for outdoor speakers with the best bass response (price no limit within reason..) For my application the speakers will be around a hut tub that is partially sunk in the ground. thx!

I have the Polk Atrium 7s and they are fantastic. I bought a separate amp for them so that they get a good 100W per ch and they really work nicely.

Plus, they are military grade in that they will withstand anything you throw at them.

I purchased the Def Tech 6500's. The radiator pointed towards the wall creates a very full sound using an Adcom amp and Denon 4311. I am happy with my purchase, neighbors are a different story. biggrin.gif

The radiator on the DT's looks promising for added depth and healthy output, though I've never heard them, I doubt you could go wrong with them.

Another brand to look at costing about $700 pair. Speakercraft Oe-8, three way design, 1", 2.5", and 8 " aluminum drivers. Never heard this one either.

I've compared and contrasted three outdoor speaker products, each with 6.5 inch midwoof:
-Polk Audio Atrium 7 $399
-Axiom Algonquin $378
-PSB Cs1001 $550

The Axiom delivered the most bass, but didn't go quite as low as the PSB and Polk. Unforunately, it is the worst speaker that I have ever owned. The PSB could output louder bass than the Polk, but they both were pretty equally in terms of the depth. All of the speakers output frequencies in the upper 40Hz range at fairly healthy volume levels.

FWIW, I'm lucky to live near ABT near Chicago and they had the DT-AW6500's set up in their sound room with a large variety of outdoor speakers, including the higher end Bose, Klipsch, etc.

Imho, the DT's were way better than the rest, with a much fuller sound and better base. To be honest, there was really nothing that came close.

I took these home and broke them in on my home theater SC-27 setup, and I was amazed how well they sounded. I will say the sensitivity is a little lower than my normal speakers, but that's normal with these smaller speakers. However, they do rock. My biggest issue is to get an Outdoor Volume Control that will handle the power, as these speakers wired directly are the bomb.

I have the Polk Sub10 and it works awesome. You can also search the Polk Ebay store for deals. Here is another choice for underground. http://www.sonance.com/products/speakers/detail/613

I have Boston Acoustic Voyager 6 and have been very happy with them. I just listened to a set of Bose (I know, "friends don't let friends buy Bose) outdoor in-the-ground version and the bass seemed pretty decent. I may get them for the front yard
