Update: December 2, 2012
I bought a new Sony camera that came with the PlayMemories Home built into the camera in October 2012. I let it install when i first plugged in the camera. It works well with all the existing photos and videos from the HX9V as well as the new ones from the RX100. I do not know what went wrong on the first try last April.
From April, 2012:
Lately, starting the Sony PMB (Picture Motion Browser) software has brought popups to upgrade to to "Playmemories Home". I gave in and did it.
It installed OK. But when I tried to "Manipulate/Edit" or press the "Edit" button it said my videos and photos were the wrong format.
With my software now screwed up, I did a little reading. Apparently there are four parts to "Playmemories". One for the cloud, one for your Sony TV, one for your computer and one for your PS3. There did not appear to be any extra editing features.
I 'fixed' it by uninstalling Playmemories, re-installing PMB, then updating it to version 5.8.02.
PMB is important if you want to trim and combine clips while preserving the original 1080p quality that a lot of editors don't do when they render.
I suggest you don't upgrade.
